Sinus Congestion help needed

Recommended Posts

Hello Omleteers,

I have suffered with blocked sinuses on and off for years, but I have quite an irritating congestion at the moment. I don't have the headaches but I can feel the congestion in my nose and to my throat, which is making me cough a lot.

Also because I can't breathe properly I am snoring like a pig and waking myself up (OH is in the other room).

We go away on Christmas eve and I am going to drive him crazy (he has already bought earplugs  )

Can anyone suggest a cure? I can't take sudafed tablets as I am on blood pressure medication, and Olbas Oil isn't working. I have seen that Sudafed have a nasal spray but am not sure if that would be safe to use?

Any help gratefully appreciated :D

I got 3 things from the doctor - antihistimine tabs, antibiotics and a nasal spray and did not really do much after the antibiotics finished - I am still driven nuts with it and OH says I snore like a pig too and I can sometimes wake myself up = I would ask for a doctor to see what he can do for you to help as there must be something. Good luck.

A mixture of essential oils of clove, mint, lavander, pine, cinnamon, rosemary and wild thyme have helped us enormously. Put 50 drops into a bowl of hot water, cover your head, and breathe in :) We buy this mixture ready combined from the chemist, but I think something similar should be available in the UK. All the best!

Hi

I think good old fashioned menthol and eucalyptus put in a steam inhalation(ie put in boiling water and sit at a table with a towel over your head and breathe the fumes)

Obviously be careful with hot water but its really cheap to buy a bottle from the chemists.

Piriton is good (as it dries up secretions hence thats why you probably got it too) nb driving drowsiness etc. Again a good cheap antihistamine to use(Tesco own brand is v good low priced same dose etc as more expensive brand)

Hope you feeling better ?Polyps up your nose?worth asking?

Good luck indie :)

I suffer with my sinuses, getting bad pain whenever I have a cold & a full on infection about once a year.

In fact they are bad now, giving me head, eye, cheek & tooth pain

Only one thing really, really works for me, & that is the double whammy of Sudafed Dual Relief Max (from a pharmacy), plus steam.

I also use Nightnurse at night, but space my medicine doses so that its safe to use with the Sudafed.

I have this brill little steamer thing from Boots,it was under £5.

It is basically a recipticle for hot water with a mouth & nose cover,so the steam is really concentrated. You can add olbas or Vicks, but its the steam that clears your pipes & does the trick :D

When I am very bad with it,I steam for 20 mins or so,getting into a zone with the slow repetative deep breathing. I can hear & feel the congestion cracking as it eases along my cheekbone & eye socket (sorry if that is a bit yucky!)

Try this & let me know how you get on.

You have my utmost sympathies - sinus pain is vile.

apart from medication stuff have you tried massage?

a few years ago I trained in Indian Head Massage, and they had part of the process to help clear sinus problems.

the idea is that you use the pads of your first 2 fingers and place them on your nose, you then press (not feather like, a big firmer than that) and run your fingers under your eyes across the top of your cheekbones (is this making any sense?? :? )

repeat a few times, you will start to feel it ease up slightly (repeat as often as you think about it  )

I told a friend at work to do this, and she said she felt better :D

good luck and I hope you are feeling better soon

cathy

On a slightly different note if it ends up eventually that you need surgery to widen your sinuses the procedure I had was brilliant.

The surgeon used a new technique where instead of using instruments to widen the passages they insert a balloon and inflate it - a bit like the heart surgery thingy I imagine.

The benefit is that I had absulutely no after effects - no bleeding, pain or swelling which is what you get from normal sinus surgery. Had to have 2 weeks off work though as apparently there is a high risk of infection after someone has been rummaging about in your nose !

All done on the NHS - I think I only waited about 2 months

My sinuses are much better - I still get tightness over my cheekbone but no infections yet and I was getting one after the other

How odd - I do this when I have problems with mine, but never knew it was a recognised method for clearing the sinuses....it just helped to ease the pressure.

I also tap along my cheekbone/eye socket, & another thing that helps is a nice hot drink in a mug, held up against the painful area.

Ah, that's why I feel better after I've done this after numerous family nonsenses! :wall:

I don't think that the central heating helps - I was bunged up last night (apparently snored as a result - but OH would say that - seasoned snorer that he is and in any case how did he hear me when he can't hear himself roaring away :notalk: ). We've turned up our heating and it has been on pretty much most of the day recently. Going out to do the birds - well, I think everything shrivelled and I managed to breathe in lots of cold air and been clear ever since - slightly uncomfortable until the nose thawed!

I can only think of a Vicks steam bath - makes your eyes water even if they are closed. Cinammon's idea sounds good.

Has anyone tried a neti pot for sinuses?

I'm suffering too Space Chick. Currently deaf as a post because of congestion, which is interesting. Hope yours get better soon! :D

That is essentially what the sinucleanse thingy is that I mentioned above. Works well.

You don't want an audience whilst you are using it though.
