Angels4
The time between one full moon and the next is close to the length of a calendar month. So the only time one month can have two full moons is when the first full moon happens in the first few days of the month. This happens every 2-3 years, so blue moons come about that often. The next blue moon will come on December 31, 2009 if you live in the Americas, Europe or Africa. If you’re in Australia, New Zealand or Asia, your clocks and calendars will show that same moon falling on January 1, 2010. So your blue moon will come at the end of January, 2010. The next year of double blue moons is coming up in 2018.

Blackrocksrock
Yes we have a blue moon tonight - did not realise that was where the saying came from - never in a blue moon!! I spoke to an old farmer who said the weather is so much determined by the moons and that next year there will be less new moons and a much better and warmer summer - I hope he is right!. Just went outside to empty the chookies water, and the sky is very clear here tonight .... brrr..... Happy New Year!

Sheilaz
Meant to post last night, thanks for this topic Mark, I had no idea about the expression either, but love information like that. My family were interested too. Until they went at all the extra details I'd researched.
Valkyrie
Didn't see it last night - just the light cast on the ground - so bright. Big full moon going down this morning. Never even thought about it being a blue moon - only heard of that before in the song.
Sheilaz
I love that song! I asked OH if he was going to serenade me with the bass line. He must have forgotten.
Cinnamon
We noticed how amazingly bright & moonlit the garden was last night too, enhanced by a sharp frost. We could walk down the garden at 11pm without the need for a torch! Beautiful,& thanks for the info Mark
Ms Marple
Did you spot the partial eclipse of the moon too? It was as if someone had bitten a small chunk out of the bottom right hand side!
Angels4
The Americas were unable to see the eclipse but it was visible in Asia, Europe, and the North Pole.
