ali-s
Is there such a thing? I have had a search on google but nothing has come up. I was wondering if there was a device we coud use to push the snow away either manually or something to fit on the front of our petrol mower the lane we live on is like a snowy ice rink and after my skid on it last thursday I am petrified of driving along it I walked to work on Monday which was actually quite pleasant. Yesterday I had to satrt work early so it was too dark to walk. I decided to drive and slipped and slid along the lane, when I reached the road I had to stop as I think I had a panic attack, sweaty, heart racing, feeling sick, couldn't breathe properly. I felt the same coming home in the afternoon. Andy is looking into getting a plastic grit box to sit at the end of our drive so we can if necessary manually shovel grit along the lane. I have some extra grippy tyres on order but they won't be here until the weekend. I could get snow tyres but they can only be used on snow and not on tarmac the main roads are clear. I am starting to get jittery again as I have to go to work in half an hour. It is very windy this morning which is making it feel very cold so I think it will not be wise to do the 50 minute walk to work. I know I should get in the car and drive but I am tempted to phone for a taxi.
Happy chickens!
My dad always just used to use a large piece of plywood, 2 or 3ft wide 4 ft long for sliding at an angle on the drive - it was quite hard work but much faster than a shovel. Alis girls
All i can say is I know how you feel - despite living in 'burbs of London i am a wreck as its hilly. I feel i cant rely on friends OH and Landrover for ever so will try and drive to school and then possibley leave car and go to work on bus. Egluntyne
Have a look **here**. I'd have a padlock on the grit bin otherwise you might find people helping themselves.
ali-s
Thanks for the link I'll show Andy tonight. The grit box would be padlocked and secured somehow to stop someone taking it away. Need to leave for work in 5 minutes and I still haven't decided how to get there
Redwing
What about snow chains? they can be taken off when you get to the main road Regarding today I dont know how important your job is but personally I wouldnt go unless perhaps you can walk to the ain road and get a bus or taxi No job is worth risking an accident for
The Dogmother
Ali, you can get snow chains for as little as £40, and investment in my opinion if you're prone to lots of snow. i've seen cars around town with them on, most of the outlying villages here are still troubled by snow. You have to drive slower, but it's worth it. I used them on a skiing trip in the Alps many years ago and I felt really secure in the ice and snow. Blackrocksrock
Ali - breathe - you have done it and you can do it but take your time I am sure you will be fine - wait for the new tyres as they will be fine - Mine are like that and can be used all year and double as snow tyres and they are great. I managed to get down a hill in hopeman which had not been gritted no bother. Take heart and just go and do it! Let us know how you get on as you will be more confident once you have done it. Problem with snow chains is you will be putting them on and taking them off as the main roads are now black and clear. I want one of these but not available in the uk! http://www.ehow.com/how_4608066_use-snow-shovel-wheels.html or even one of these.... looks like a conversion to a strimmer!! http://www.ehow.com/how_4610056_use-power-snow-shovel.html
Alis girls
Hope you got there and back safely. I drove slowly with a black 4x4 on my bumper and arrived cold, gibbering and in need of coffee and TLC which receptionist duly deleivered. Then did it all in reverse ( that is journey not driving backwards ) and arrived home to 2 cross mogs baying for food and the prospect of school run to do. Hope everyone got from A-B safely - breathe. Ali -K
ali-s
Well I made off the lane this morning , very scary My car is now parked at the start of the lane and I walked down to to the cottage. Natalie hasn't been swim training for over a week and is desperate to go today. Hopefully if I am not now stuck in the snow on the verge I can reverse out and take her to the pool. I will then have to decide to drive back home or leave the car again and get Andy to bring it to the cottage. Walking on the frozen ice and snow was awful, ditch on one side and field on the other with nothing to hold onto so I had to slide along. I'm wondering now if it is actually safe for Natalie to be walking to the end to catch the school bus Jack has been home all day and says not one vehicle has driven down the lane to the Castle today. Normally there are at least 3 cars in the car park from first light until dark with people walking their dogs, I think people are avoiding the lane. Thankfully I have got a day off work tomorrow. Friday I will let Andy take my car to work and to get the new tyres fitted, I will either walk to work or get a taxi. Thanks for the links to snow ploughs, it might be something we buy and never have to use but I might just keep my sanity knowing it is in the shed should we need it. ali-s
Andy has just walked through the door 3 hours early than normal to take Natalie swimming. He couldn't believe I had driven the lethal lane this morning as he had real problems when he went to work, he says the lane is even worse than ever. He didn't bother to text or phone telling me not to use the car because he didn't think I would try today
Ain't Nobody Here
Doesn't help with the car, but have you heard of Yak Trax for your feet? I've just received my pair (the snow is slowly melting here, naturally ).
Blackrocksrock
Well done you - glad you made it and hope it clears away soon - ours is melting fast but still cannot get parked down the high street for snow at the sides - they have started digging it and taking it away by digger now!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Clur
If you're really worried about driving in it (and I'm the same!), carry a bag of cat litter in the boot - if you get stuck or it's very slippy, throw some of that down and it'll provide a little traction. Alis girls
And a pair of scissors to open bag as if you are cack handed like moi you will need them - I find them impossible to open
