Feeling very sorry for myself - fallen arches UPDATE

Recommended Posts

Hi,

 feeling so sorry for myself, I have had a painful foot since before xmas causing me to walk with a limp, so I went to podiatrist who said I had fallen arches and that the foot that wasnt hurting at all was the worst flat foot of the two. She gave me support insoles but they are so built up the only shoes I have got that they fit into are my wellies!

Upon being nagged by family I went to the docs last week, doctor confirmed yep..fallen arches .....nothing to be done.........get some insoles.........if anything its going to get worse and not better.

I am in agony today, any length of time on my feet as in gardening yesterday and I really suffer :( My good foots ankle is swollen and puffy, my knee is killing me and my back is hurting too)

I have alway worn flat shoes thinking these were the best, apparently not. I am 40 this year love walking the dog and have always been active. I feel so sad now that possibly at my age I am going to suffer with pain?? ..forever??

Any one any suggestions for shoes? i have looked at earth shoes but only available online and cant try before buy, and although they are supposed to tone like fit flops I dont know if they have proper arch support.

I had my first tears today about this as am walking like an 80 year old (no disrespect) feel so sad

I've had a similar problem, and it does go away provided you wear the right kind of shoes plus your insoles.

I've found a good pair of shock-absorbing trainers plus the insoles, or a good pair of stout walking boots or shoes plus the insoles do the trick. Both trainers and walking boots or shoes should have a slight raise to the heel - completely flat shoes are not a good idea. I've found Asics and Saucony trainers are good, but it depends on your foot shape. About a 1-2cm heel seems to be the best for me, although I can wear up to 5cm comfortably.

Once the pain and swelling has settled down you will be able to wear normal shoes or sandals for a short time without the insole - don't try and wear them all day. This means you can still wear fashion shoes for an evening out.

Sorting out your feet should also cure your back pain as this is a consequence of misalignment in your feet which in turn causes problems with your knees, hips and back.

As for walking - I managed to do a half-marathon after I had this problem diagnosed, so I think you'll be back to it once the insoles have done their job!

My OH and my mum both suffer from something called something like plantar fasciitis which isn't the same but both were in pain/unable to walk properly. Basically they both have to wear orthotics (built up pads) in their shoes/slippers/everything. It really does help them. They both went to docs/sports physios about this and were given stretching exercises which do help and which they repeat if the pain comes back because they've forgotten to keep up with it. My Mum was able to get her orthotics off the shelf in Boots, I think OH got a proper one to start with and now buys off the internet because he knows what he wants. My Mum got it because she needed a new hip and then had to relearn how to walk, OH got it because he cycles and had been putting pressure on knees etc.

Anyway, the orthotics have changed their lives - I hope it might work for you. However, we do still have difficult sandal shopping excursions; and thats just my OH! It seems hard to find sandals the supports can fit in.

Oh I do sympathise. I don't have fallen arches (...yet!) but I do have very high arches that have caused bunions and clawed toes. I am only 27 years old :(

Fallen arches may be likely for me in the future.

I have had some insoles made for me by the podiatrist and they do take a bit of getting used to. I found them more uncomfortable at first than not wearing them, but now I do feel it in my feet if I haven't worn them for a couple of days. Not only will they support your arches but also stabilise your knees and hips which can make you more comfortable all round.

Flat shoes are definitely not the best. I have been recommended to wear 1-2 inches. It's best to ask your podiatrist what the ideal heel height is for you as it depends on the natural height of your arches and therefore foot shape/structure. I find Clarks 'unstructured' range of shoes is good as they all have removeable insoles which you can replace with your custom othotics. This is much more comfortable than trying to wedge an insole inside a shoe which already has an insole fixed in!

Oh and if you do find a shoe that's comfortable to wear with your insoles, please buy two pairs as when you need to replace them you can guarantee you will have a devil of a job finding a replacement pair that you like!

Thank you all for your replies, its nice to hear positive news :)

I was having a bad day, and coupled with the nagging pain, felt low :(

I will definately shop around, I do need trainers so will look our for the asics and other ones.

Its so nice to have words of comfort when you feel blue!

What I cant understand is why its happened so suddenly?

I lost over 3 stone 18 months ago so not weight issue, but I am a flip flop all summer long girl, so maybe thats it?

I am also going to find some low heeled shoes as suggested.

thank you all, you have made me feel better, what wondeful people omleteers are :D

I have had diagnosis of over pronation of one of my feet and was told to buy othaheel insoles - I bought the sport ones and took out the insole in my shoes and put that in - I bought a cheaper pair on ebay and they fit into my crocs just great - they are Dr someones and fit wonderfully - I have had no problems with them and they fit my shoes too - have used them now for months and there is a difference already, Keep trying

Are they Dr Foot? They're the ones I have, they're a bit uncomfortable, I'll have to keep trying I think.

No the ones I wear all day in my shoes are Orthaheel ones the sports ones - they are quite stiff but not sore to wear and I wear them every day. Most shoes you can take out the insole and replace it with this and the ones I have in my crocs for home wear are dr jerry from an ebay shop after a search on the net

these are my day ones and were recommended by my physio and doctor

You poor thing! I have 'pronation - i.e feet tip inwards towards each other at the ankle, so I too have insoles. they do tak a lot to get used to - I can't wear them in all my shoes, but try finding one or two pairs of shoes you can wear them with and start wearing them from time to time to let your feet get used to them, then gradually build it up.

There is life after insoles, honest! :)

You have made me think about my YD's feet now. She has always been pigeon toed and her feet definately turn in on the inside at the ankle too. I wonder if I should look for some insoles for her.

Has anyone any experience of this sort of thing in children, she is 11 and moans everytime we have to walk any distance or go on a long shopping trip, that her feet really hurt.

I hope that the insoles do the trick for you Margalot, it is horrible to feel old before your time. I had a shoulder problem when I turned 40 and thought that that was it, I would have to put up with it. I had some fantastic physio on the NHS and it made me as good as new. :D

I have custom made orthotics, they took plaster casts of my feet, my feet were crushed in a car accident and re-built so they don't quite go the right way. Without my "feet" as they are called, I can only hobble for a few feet, as they have a large tilt I have to wear boots and boot type slippers but they make a huge difference. It stops me throwing my hip and knee forwards and alsorts......

Shoe buying for me nearly always ends in tears but I have to remember my feet are still attached and are mine.

Look after them and insoles really do work and better still if they are fitted.

I was diagnosed fallen arches around eight years ago, caused from 20 years working in a factory environment, 10- 12 hour days & nights on concrete floors. My worst symptom was "aching knees".

My GP recommended me to the local "Scholl shop" who were brilliant.

They got me measured for some "custom made inserts", quite expensive, but probably the best £80.00 I've ever spent. The inserts were made by a company called "Tayler made".

I don't go anywhere without them and they are quite "thin" so fit in all my shoes.

The other advice I was given was to try wearing "Doctor Matrens" shoes or boots as the "airwair" sole would also help with the symptoms.

My symptoms disappeared with around 2 weeks of getting the inserts, I attend an annual check-up at the Scholl shop and have had no problems since.

Thank you for all your replies, but my problem is still going on and getting worse! I am barely able to walk without hobbling and in pain. I had orthotics for my shoes which did help at first, but now make my ankles sore. so switched to fit flops for now as again seemed to help relive pain initially, but still no complete recovery.

I was so distressed by this Monday I booked an appointment with a physiotherapist to see if there was anything I could be doing to help the pain which is now both ankles, one heel and suffering from tennis elbow and painful wrist on the same arm. Both my ankles are hot and very swollen. she did a thorough exam and has referred me back to the doctor with a letter for a blood test. Result! went to doctor today and she did the blood test there and then and have just got back from the hospital where they took x-rays of ankle joints andd wrist joint. now have a week or so for results. they are going to test for rheumatoid arthritis, or at least if that ruled out then I can go ahead and get some physio or see a foot specialist. Feel relieved that at last they realise its not just a small problem and is really making my life miserable at the moment. I have googled RA and stopped reading quickly, as until tests back whats the point? much better when you couldnt google everything and apply your symptoms to every condition. Apart form that I feel very well in myself, so hoping test come back as a negaitve. Thank you all your support, this is such a lovely forum and great to unload worries. also just sitting with the chooks is sooooo theraputic, maybe they should come on prescription?? :D

My doctor rang me on Fiday pm with the results of the x-ray and bloods. talk about quick! x-rays show nothing but bloods show there is "something" going on so now back on Weds for another blood test an ERF test? previous blood showed high protein?, this means nothing to me and I would rather remain ignorant at the moment I think? then back to the doc of Friday to get those results and now have an urgent appointment with the Rhuematologist (well 23rd June) so at least they are looking for something they obviously think its Rhuematoid arthritis, but I do have my doubts and hope that they are barking up the wrong tree this time. :(

I have rested my feet as much as poss this weekend and they feel much better but my right foot is still swollen and tender. very frustrating when you can view stuff all around to be done but are struggling to do it. My OH has been brilliant and has done everything, kids still being their normal lazy selves though. I think because I look well and feel well they dont think anything is different.

I will keep you posted as to results as may need some support from you all! still smiling though :D
