Leicester_H
According to my local paper - the Leicester Mercury http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/news/words-make-display/article-1928539-detail/article.html Two nurseries are asking parents to listen out for their child's first words as part of their national Book Month celebrations. Daddy, chicken and doggy are among the most popular entries at Marlborough Day Nursery, in Coalville, and Ashby Castle, in Ashby. The children's first utterances are being featured in a Fabulous First Words display. So chickens seem to be making an impact more than mummies!! chickencam
The problem is Mummy is always there, so unlikely to be commented on. My ED's first word was 'at for cat and before she could say that she said oww imitating the noise that the cat made.
Chucky Mama
2 of mine said the dog's name 'Jaeger' and the third sang a song
whoopsie
My cousin is a vet and we all joked that Dog would be her first proper word - It was, too!! It was declared loudly at the animal in question when it came into the room, not just a word but recognition too!
BeckyBoo
Yes, my eldests first word was cat middle daughter said "Ineedat" which translates as I need that (she hasn't stopped "needing" things since ) small boy (I think, how could I have forgotten ) did actually say Dad first (I think) BeckyBoo
Sheilaz
First son held out his empty cup and said "Gone" Second son held out his empty cup and said "More" Both daughters followed this theme too. Don't know where they get it from. Would loved to have heard Chicken.
majorbloodnock
I can't remember either of my children's first words, but I do remember that my daughter started talking with the notion that every bird was a duck. Her conviction was so absolute that we almost gave one of our first chickens the name "duck". It would have been interesting seeing a chicken with an identity crisis; they're not the most level-headed at the best of times....
theherd123
Isabelle's first word was Teddy She now wont stop talking and can usually be found hanging onto the handle of her food cupboard in the kitchen shouting 'feed me' 'more' or 'bar'! The girl has hollow legs!

Not my sons first words, but every bird to him was "Duck" and one of our original Omlet BlackRocks is still called Duck - named by him!! Lesley
The Major has just reminded me of the time we passed a couple of horses on a narrow lane and slowed down - neither of the teenage girls acknowledged this and Carl said (just between us) "Snotty Cows" - forgetting that we had an 18 month old Lauren in the back - for a couple of years she insisted that horses were called snotty cows
Valkyrie
Number one's first proper word was "shower" but he said it like Penelope Keith would pronounce it. Great source of amusement to us - especially grandparents. I have no idea what Madam's first word was (much to her disgust). @ snotty cows! Saronne
My youngest's first words were 'dog dirt' He obviously learned that from my daily rants of "Mind the dog dirt!" as he sat in his pushchair whilst I walked my older ones to school each day... patsylabrador
One of my children's first words were at a family BBQ and he just came out with 'more meat'. He hasn't changed, he's always hovers behind me when I'm carving a roast to ' check it's ok', or to pinch the crackling.

sadietoo
I thought my dd was foreign to start with, cos her first word was Da meaning yes... Also monkey, was for reasons known only to her, "madden" and when referring to what she did at night she told us she was "farty leaps"
Lesley
We still use the words Beckpoos (breakfast), Lonk (milk) and Farties (Smarties) - all courtesy of my son who is mid thirties ....and his version of his favourite advert was "For mash get Smashed"
Valkyrie
Mum tells me my first one was bear blane (aeroplane) apparently it came with actions too - go to window, point finger upwards.
