jellykelly
Well I got my new hens today. A black cochin, a white cochin and a blue orpington. When I arrived at the farm, the black cochin was shown to me (held tightly by the owner) and then bundled into a box. I wanted a black and this was the only one she had. I then selected my white and the orpington. As the other two wer in great condtion (and the black appeared to be from the quick glance), I thought no more of it paid and left. When we got home and removed them from the boxes, the black cochin has a toe (the middle one) going off at a right angle. I called immediately but suprise surprise, the mobile is off. The hen appears to be ok on it - but still............... I'm not pleased.
chelsea
My white cochin has wonky toes, we purchased her quite young and never really noticed it until she matured. It doesn't bother me or her to be honest, I think it's only a real problem if you are planning on showing.
jellykelly
I've no plans to show her - I'm just really annoyed at myself for not looking. Also annoyed at her for deliberatly trying to hide it (I'm sure she did!) I checked everything in the others. It didn't strike me as odd that she boxed her and asked me to select which white one I fancied. I should have checked!
batcatz
Ah that's annoying. Keep trying to phone them. Would you take her back or try to get some money back? Edit: or just tell them off for hiding it? I would.
Ain't Nobody Here
I can understand you being cross, she obviously knew what she was doing . But I reckon the little girl is lucky to have ended up with you, who will love her, wonky toe 'n' all . I've read of lots of hens with wonky toes who manage fine, so I'm sure you don't need to worry .
Space Chick
I have a Silkie with a wonky toe, it adds to her charm
jellykelly
I don't know what'll I do yet. I'll decide when she answers the phone!
Chucky Mama
She probably knows that it is you calling. It was very naughty as there is no way that she wouldn't have known. She should have given your the option of whether you wanted her with her wonky toe or not. You may well have said yes. Egluntyne
Naughty of the breeder, but tbh, unless you are planning to breed from the hen, and she is able to walk about happily, there should be no problem.
madchickenlady
My gold partridge pekin has not only a wonky toe, but also fused toes. She walks and perches fine I didn't notice when I bought her (all the feathers ), but as I'm not breeding or showing her its not a problem. jellykelly
I am reassured a little now. I'm just peeved that the lady was not honest and clearly tried to hide the toe thing. Heather (wonky toe) has not moved from the side of the other cochin and appears to want to be in contact with her at all times (nice contact - no pecking). It seems a bit mean to ask to change her now. If the woman does ever return my call, she will be told off . It's a shame though, as I would have probably returned to her at a later date for more (she does have silver spangled hamburgs) - but not now
Egluntyne
Ask her for a partial refund.
Griffin
Angelina Legbar has wonky toes. She was born with straight toes but as she's grown they've gone wonky. It doesn't bother her at all, the same thing happened to her brother so I guess it's a hereditary problem and I'd never breed from them. chickyhazel
Wonky toes shouldn't affect her, so I would keep her if I were you but tell the lady off. If you know her address, you could write to her if she keeps not answering your calls. Or if you have her email, email her.
txswanie
i also have wonky toes, too much pointy shoe wearing in the 80's. I would keep her but give them grief and never buy anything from that farm again.
Mollie333
Hi, such a shame that people can be like that, if she just said, look, she has a problem with her toes.. some people.. desperate to get rid of her by the sounds? but if you want a refund, try calling her on a different phone (different number) or just turn up where you got her from. goodluck. jellykelly
I couldn't take her back now - she's lovely. I was watching them last night. The silly girls didn't know where to go to bed so the white cochin, who's currently twice the size of the black one, was trying to bury herself underneath the black one to go to sleep. T'was very cute. The two cochins appear to be the very best of friends, and to swap for one that maybe wouldn't be as 'pal-ly' would be horrible. batcatz
ahhh sounds lovely . Maybe the seller wanted them to go together and that's why she hid the toe?

jellykelly
Four days on and I really feel that I have been sold a dud! Poor little thing looks like she's on deaths door. She'll only eat out of my hand, will not move away from the side of the other one and has the typical hunch of a sickling. Why me!! I'm beginning to wish I hadn't have been so hasty and had have had the patience to hang on for the reply from the other seller regarding her Brahma's. Egluntyne
That is a shame, and puts a whole new complexion on things. Being sold a hen with an imperfection is quite a different matter to being sold a sick one. I would speak to the dealer face to face and demand at least a refund.
