CRB checks

Recommended Posts

I have two, each time I get given the form to fill in by the organisation, school and the governing body for archery as I am an archery coach and therefore need one for that.

Each time I have had one it comes with a leaflet explaining how to fill in it. I would read carefully before you start as we get a lot returned or questioned at school simply because they were not filled in correctly.

Good Luck

Chrissie

It is the organisation who you work for/volunteer for that has to apply for your CRB and should give you the paperwork.....over the last few years I have had about 6 CRB's as each organisation says they have to have their own done, this is despite all of them being under the umberella of the Local Authority!

yes I agree, I have 3 myself.. and each organisation gave me the form :)

I did hear though that it was changing this year, so you get a 'crb passport' stopping the need to get a new crb check for each organisation, but I am not sure if thats in affect yet.

Not yet, I have just been CRB checked, still the old system. Make sure you fill it out correctly!

The new system doesn't come in until this summer at the earliest so until then you have to continue with the CRB. And yes the organisation that wants you to get checked should supply the paperwork, collect it from you and send it off. Some of them do their own check of the paperwork before they send it off. Mine for the scouts took ages although I'd 2 or 3 CRB's already as the scout association struggled with the concept I had a different surname to my husband  put my form to one side, lost it, got me to complete another when it was chased and they revealed the'd lost it, another person struggled with the concept eventually sent it to the CRB authority who processed it as normal - felt like telling the scouts women are allowed to vote as well these days

As others have said, the organisation that wants the check done, will give you the form and you return it to them. They need to see you and your proofs of identity/address in person, before the form is sent off - which is what I do. They're not portable though, which is why some of us (I have 3), have so many.

I deal with CRB application forms in school and to be honest, as long as you actually read the guidance notes whilst filling it in and look carefully at the list of Group 1 and Group 2 items valid as proof if identity, it's a doddle to fill in. In saying that, you wouldn't believe the number of people I have to send back, who've completely botched the form, or have just brought in their passport, because they haven't bothered to read the guidance and have just filled the form in without thinking.

Things are changing this summer though, with the introduction of the new vetting and barring system on July 26th by the Independent Safeguarding Authority. All NEW employees and volunteers over 16 after that date have to be registered BEFORE starting the job, if working with vunerable adults or children in a regulated activity, which is classed as (at least) once a week, or overnight, or 4 days in a month (eg a weekend camp). After this date it will be against the law for any employer/volunteer group to take on anyone who isn't registered first.

It is, however, the individual's responsibility to register themselves, not their employer's and whilst it will be free for volunteers, it will cost £64 for employees, although the guidance says some employers 'may' pay this!

All people working before that date will gradually be requested to register over the next few years to 2015.

The info on this came out a few weeks ago and I read that they are combining the CRB and vetting and barring register on to one form, with the current form being withdrawn and the new one phased in for July.

Hope this helps!

I need to get one done, and the charity concerned have sent me the forms and asked me to go to the Post Office with all the documentation - something called Swiftcheck, whereby they will check the forms and note the originals, and then I can take my documents away with me again. The charity is not local to me, which is why I have to do this rather than get them to do the checks, and I think they have to pay a small fee for this (although the CRB check itself is free) so they don't encourage it unless absolutely necessary. As said above, the guidance is clear it's just there is such a lot of it to read! A brilliant tip about taking a photocopy though, wish I'd done that with the last one.
