Poo picking!

Recommended Posts

I see on here that lots of people do this daily - I assume it's really only something you can do with a WIR though? How do people with Eglus and the standard Eglu run manage - I'm not quite dedicated enough to crawl in on my hands and knees and do it that way!

Hi

I poo pick their garden, cube runs and poo trays most days.

When I had the eglu run I was one to crawl in and poo pick (neighbours must of thought I was mad) occasionaly but as I used wood chips and then aubiose I discovered that a quick rake over sufficed :)

On run cleanout day I lifted the eglu and run off to clear away the used litter.

I don't have the Eglu run but personally, I would move the run over, clear the area then put it back in place. Before our WIR we had a low level 'rabbit run' type...and only half the 'roof' opened...so we had to tip it on end once the girls went to bed to poo pick!!

I have a small WIR and I only do it once a week - I suppose it depends on your flooring and how it manages the poo. I use Hemcore and it makes some of it break down or and it seems to make it less visible until poo picking time. In the bad weather of winter it was as and when - even fortnightly.

Thanks for your replies! I'm using wood chip and I intend on giving it a rake and a bit of a change once a week, or more if necessary. Hopefully that will prove sufficient for my little ladies!

On a related note, Popcorn did a yellow poo yesterday. What's THAT all about?

It is what we lovingly refer to on here as a "curry poo" :vom: Honk to high heaven and sticky as anything.Really called Ceacal, Curry poos are nomal and they probably do one in every eight or so poos. So normal :)

The array of different poos they do is quite astounding...give it a month or two and you will be an expert

Aaaah I see. I wondered vaguely if she'd somehow managed to evacuate a yolk without the white or the rest of the shell! Tsk - with a baby, cat and now two chickens, my morning routine consists of shovelling food into small creatures and my evening routine cleaning it up when it comes out the other end!

it is very therapeutic poo picking - I rake Eglu wood chips and go round garden and poo pick off lawn and patio with gloves. I have a small compost bucket for the allotment and its full to take up there. mental note to self - get out more

Well if you need to get out more then so do I!

The bucket is a v. good idea. I'm learning fast, chicken masters.

I find ordinary disposable gloves too big. I use 'surgical' gloves all the time for all things chook as I like the tight fitting feeling of them. I find a pair can last a good few days if they are just for day to day tidying up. The local Pound shop sells a pack of 30 for £1.

BUT - I have to wear ordinary thin wooly gloves underneath as I've become allergic to the latex and the back of my hands were covered in a rash. Buying non latex ones is a no-no as they are hideously expensive round here.

I need to get out more - I clean the hen-house daily while the girls eat breakfast and I poo-pick when they are getting ready for bed. I find it very therapeutic too, it's very satisfying when it's all tidy for the morning. I get the feed ready in the evening for the following day too. Whatever will I do if we get invited out one evening :anxious:
