theherd123
A chap who works with my OH has children at Colebourne School and they have hatched some chicks! Take a look, they live streaming too! www.colebourne.bham.sch.uk

Martin B
It's good that the youngsters are getting the experience!
Carolinep
Very school
feemcg
I offered a loan of my incubator (and services!) to do a hatching at Anna's school and after-school club and was politely declined - something to do with new rules and regs. When I took the chics up last week for a visit the head said the children could look but not touch - but the teacher let them and just told them all to wash their hands (common sense!). Egluntyne
Its to do with salmonella risks with chicks which have not yet been vaccinated, apparently.
Snowy
I've just looked at the webcam, not really expecting to see anything - should be all in darkness shouldn't it? But they have a light on! Poor things look as though they are desperate to fall asleep - they all droop and shut their eyes, then jump up wearily and shuffle around before trying to sleep again! Is that right or am I barking up the wrong tree!
Christian
Just had a quick peek before work and they are up and about! How cute are they!!!!!?!
feemcg
Snowy, I don't like the bright white heat bulbs either - I'm using a ceramic heat bulb which only gives heat, no light, and the chicks have natural dusk and dawn, same as the big girls. The Dogmother
I thought it seemed a bit bright too, poor little 'uns
Egluntyne
Perhaps someone who knows about these things should contact the school.
Louise
You can get red bulbs which the chicks don't see as light Problem with the ceramic ones is a fire risk if they come down as they get sooooooooo hot
The Dogmother
The poor little s"Ooops, word censored!"s were all huddled down on the floor when I looked earlier. Perhaps they need a rest from the light. Louise, I've only ever seen red lights in brooders. So they must be best.
Lesley
We're using a ceramic lamp as well this time - we used the infra red one last time but I didn't like them having light all night either. They are the same age as our 7 new ones
Louise
Red light would be my choice if I ever hatched chicks again the only problem is once they get switched off they usually won't be any use so you have to buy a new one every time They aren't too expensive I couldn't get into the live stream maybe it has crashed
Lesley
Why the red lights Louise? I felt happier with the ceramic one.
Louise
The ceramic ones get so hot there is a risk of burning yourself or the chicks and if they fall into the pen they can start a fire as they stay hot for so long wheras the 'light' ones both white and red light are more like a normal bulb and cool down quite quickly Tis a health and safety thing
Lesley
Ah! I'll just go and check the chain which the lamp is hanging from then I did forget to tell son that we have a new lamp - he was used to the other, red, one................ he thought it wasn't working............... he touched it to see................ feemcg
I can't get on to the live stream either, Louise. I was advised the red light extracts essential vitamins and minerals from the chick crumb - or was it that it affects the chicks absorbing them - not sure! - but it was something to do with that anyway! Ceramic bulbs are also what Hatch It Incubators recommends so I'll stick with that I think - will just make sure it can't fall down!
theherd123
Perhaps someone who knows about these things should contact the school. I will contact my OHs work friend and tell him to get it sorted, after all his children go to the school so will have some contact details for someone I cant see the live webstream as my laptop needs an urgent rebuild
Snowy
Just checked again and the light doesn't seem to be bothering them now - all fast a bo bo's!! Aaah!
