kazaddress
Hello all, sorry its been a while, things have been a bit mad at home. Anyway. My OH's sister is a teacher, and the school she works at had a company that comes around, and hands over hatching eggs to the school for the kids to see, and the school keeps them for the first 2-3 weeks, then the company comes and "dispaches" them to chick heaven I am rescuing the girls, but there are about 4 male chicks that are going to be dispatched on friday unless they can find a home. any ideas? The school is near Harlow, however simons sister is driving up to our house on friday wth our chicks, so could probably bring them all if we could find them a home! *sob* It broke my heart when i found out! Cinnamon
Hi Kaz, Good to hear from you Isn't that horrible about the chicks ? No ideas I am afraid, but I do hope someone else comes along soon who can help
The Dogmother
Try Lesley - if she can fatten them up, they'll be for the pot.
Paola
That is soooo awful Hope you manage to find them homes
craftyhunnypie
I bet they don't tell the kids that the chicks are getting murdered!!!!
Leanne
Kaz, ring Harlow Council. Theres a council run petting zoo sort of place in Harlow Town Park called Pets Corner, If the council can get you the number and you call, maybe they would take the chicks from your sister- in- law? A long shot but worth a try? good luck,
kazaddress
I never thought of pets corner.. I will ask them
Lesley
Try Lesley - if she can fatten them up, they'll be for the pot. I think Kaz would be just as horrified at that Clare
The Dogmother
Sorry Kaz, it made sense to me that they'd be of some use rather than killed as little chickies. I'm a tad too pragmatic like that

AnnieP
Kaz, I've seen stuff from these companies at work, and have considered doing it at my school. Nowhere on their literature does it say the chicks will be dispatched.... can you pm me the company's name as I want to have words with them about their advertising and information given if that is the case. Cheers!

Yes, I'd heard about them too and thought what a good idea it was for the children to be able to see the chicks hatch. I had no idea that they dispatched unwanted chicks afterwards either . Popcorn
Oh gosh. I hope they don't dispatch them after the chicks have 'served their purpose'. I'd be very surprised and upset if they did, especially if they are so open about it too with them being involved with children in schools. Would be pretty outrageous infact..... kazaddress
Leslie. if you wanted the boys I would be very happy with that. I wouldnt mind if they actually had a life, its just the fact they are "dispatched" at only a few weeks old that got me I mean, what an absolute waste! will ask Simons sister the name of the company when i see her next! AnnieP
Paola... I think I'd go in ASAP and ask the teacher in charge of science what happens to the male chicks.... let them know what you are worrying about. I am sure no school would touch a company who dispatches male chicks with a barge pole. Edited March 21, 2007 by Guest
Lesley
a company who dispatches male chicks with a barge pole. Well, that's one way of doing it I suppose! Obviously, the male chicks do need to be dealt with - but it does seem unfair that they are despatched at such an early age.

AnnieP
Yes Paola, you're right.. just re-read it: Kaz says she is going to have the girls..... You'll have to check for both!
kazaddress
Just to clarify... both the male and female chicks were up to be dispatched.... however i have said I will be able to rehome the girls... so its just he boys left would end up being too noisy for a built up neighbourhood). If i wasnt saving them, then the girl chicks would be up for the chop too
Lesley
Kaz, the boys won't be crowing until about 20 weeks. If you have room to temporarily re-house them all, that would give you more time to find a home nearby for the boys?
