Cinnamon
Ok, firstly, let me say that I am not a fan of the game,& know very little about it at all. But as it been in the fore now for several weeks, something has been niggling away at me. If we are the English team, how come our manager is from Italy (I am assuming this because of his name,it could be that he is Spanish or something!) This doesn't seem right to me.English team = English manager surely? Maybe there is some complicated reason that we can have a manager from whatever nation we like,I don't know??? I did try to ask my Dad & Brother, but they just bleated on about national pride, the good of the team & how I was unpatriotic
Egluntyne
I rather imagine that we won't have an Italian manager for very much longer!
Janty
I got called unpatriotic by my 14 year old because I said that the vast majority of the England team are overpaid, self obsessed brats. I have got into the World Cup in a different way...we are eating our way through the World Cup. We have collected recipes from the various countries that are taking part and we are having the meals from those countries on the nights when they play (if that makes sense). we have had Brazilian meatballs with Brazilian rice, tapas (Delia's Waitrose recipe), bobotie and many more. We have discovered lots of new family favourites.
theherd123
that the vast majority of the England team are overpaid, self obsessed brats. Very true. The money they get paid is astronomical and would help a small country get out of poverty within a few years! Has anyone else noticed that a lot of the teams from countries which are deemed to be quite poor are still in or have already qualified to the next round? Maybe they have the ambition, hunger and drive our boys are lacking?

That is pretty much word for word what we said here about the team too I have got into the World Cup in a different way...we are eating our way through the World Cup. Cinnamon
We have been drinking our way through it too - have discovered a few cracking South African reds And I made Bobotie last week
Charlottechicken
Has anyone else noticed that a lot of the teams from countries which are deemed to be quite poor are still in or have already qualified to the next round? Maybe they have the ambition, hunger and drive our boys are lacking? I think in the past the governments of those poorer countries have offered cars and the like as incentives for their (well deserved) players. Can you imagine offering our team a new car, they have the best money can buy already. My mother thinks if we picked random young men playing football from parks and recreation grounds around the UK we could come up with a team who would at least try to win Like everyone else has said, they are grossly overpaid
jlo
I haven't got an answer to the original question but I seem to remember that a few years ago when Sven was taken on as England manager there was a lot of kerfuffle about whether it was right that a Swede manage our national team - I think that he was the first foreign manager. As none of the previous few English incumbents had done a particularly good job, it was felt that we needed something different. As I recall he did pretty well for a while and then things went downhill - just as has happened with Fabio. People always expect our National Team to be good as the top premier teams can compete with the best in the world. There used to be a rule that there could only be so many foreign players in a league side but then that went by the board and nearly all the top teams are made up of foreign players. Perhaps we could take it a step further and recruit foreign players for the National side Oh - and totally agree about the obscene amount of money that these players are paid! tara
l have thought the same it dose seem funny to me.It really dose make me wonder why our team dont play as a team we could of done so well. There comming home and were now out wonder if they will make any changes.lm not backing germany even tho they did play well im a bad lose will watch the other games to see who wins and at least we can deel with our disapointment sooner rather then later l suppose. That lampard player is a bit of all right too
sadietoo
I loved Private Eye's issue before the world cup..they were offering a "cut out and keep" wall chart on which to enter the excuses for why England didn't win/get through to the next round. Apparently, although they are paid what £70K per week?? the ball was the wrong shape...now we have a disallowed goal (even though the better team went on to score to more afterwards)....get a grip chaps..people are starving in the world and there are more important things to worry about... never has the word "losers" seemed so apt

Seagazer
Cookie could play a better game of football than our rather poor excuse of a football team.
Tiggy
apparently the rest of Europe have the winter off playing, giving the players a rest our lot certainly looked as if they needed a rest they also looked as if they had hardly played together at all as a team, maybe if our lads spent more time praciticing football insead of courting the media & shall we say errrrr exercising in other ways, we may get a result
docsquid
A lot of teams doing well in the World Cup have managers from another country - they try and get in the best managers possible, regardless of their nationality. Sven is now managing Ivory Coast. However, I think it should be made that you have to have a coach from your own country, making it a truly national team. I also think the English bunch of overpaid and underskilled players thought they could just turn up and run around a bit and they would somehow win without having to try. They clearly don't have the skill and certainly not the drive and determination that other nations' footballers have. I think a lot of it is down to the general idea that competitive and team sports are bad in schools, so the will to win is not built in to every child. Yes, it means that there are some losers, but that is life! The sooner they learn that if you want something you have to fight for it, and work hard, the better. I think they should start looking for people who really want to play for England, not those who think it is their right because they have high wages and several Ferraris in the garage. chelsea
I do think the manager should be English. Capello speaks very little english so how on earth does he get across to the players what is required? The manager has to take some of the blame for how we played in the world cup. He took injured players, players recovering from injuries, strikers who can't score (Heksey!) and was playing players out of position (Terry, Upson, Gerrard) the country's fans were screaming at him about what system to play and which players to play, he must be stubborn or something as this just didn't happen. The premier league is a tough long old season, followed by miss timed "friendlies" before the WC and this has obviously taken it's toll on some of the players.
