Purplemaniacs
Last night did a load of washing but now the washing machine will not spin. It is over 6 years old so has done well. Last month bought DD a new one as hers had given up. Not sure what to get for us, the old one spins at 1600 or at least it used to. Do I go for well known makes like Hotpoint, Hoover .... or for cheaper ones or would that be false economy in the long run. Any features that are essential? Any advice? Thank you Chrissie
abwsco
Chrissie, it only sounds like the brushes have gone so no need to buy a new one.
Christian
Ours stopped spinning last week and we called out a repair man. £79 and he fixed it OH had overloaded the drum with towels and it had 'fallen off centre' He said the brushes had at least 5 years life left in them. It is already 8 years old. A Bosch with a 1400 spin. See if there is anyone local who could fix it. I was in two minds at first as the fee was £79 regardless, but this time it saved us buying a new machine.
The Dogmother
I've had various machines (mostly Hotpoint) fixed over the years and they mostly make it to 6+ years. on the recommendation of my repair man, I now have a Zanussi - best machine I have ever had anf the same price as a Hotpoint! Sounds like we may have the same machine Christian although mine has had to have 3 sets of brushes but I do loads of washing and extra rinses and spins due to excema. Chrissie, see if you can find someone recommended to you who will come out for no call out fee. Mine cost just under £50 for the brushes last time. I'm not sure if my machine is 10 years old actually. I'm lusting after a Miele when it finally gives up the ghost but will probably get another german made Bosch due to the cost when I need a new one. Blackrocksrock
When mine does not spin its usually the fluff filter blocked and when cleaned works ok.
Aunty e
When I finally kill this machine with nappies, I'm having one of these. I'm practically dribbling looking at it. http://www.hoover.co.uk/products/18/laundry/22/washing-machines/444/dynamic-10-steam/ No problems washing a duvet in this! Olly
Wow! As anyone who has cats will know, the ability to wash a duvet at short notice would be very useful. I can't see a price for that baby, though!
Purplemaniacs
I can't see a price for that baby, though! Not in my budget, me thinks Off to clean the filter on mine. Chrissie
ubereglu
Bosch and Miele ones are good and last quite a long time.
chickric
We have one of these here. Not cheap, but very good, we have never managed to fully load it and it takes our king size duvet easily. Being 'direct drive' it is also very quiet and when we first had it we kept checking to see it was still working! Wash cycles can seem to take a long time if you put on all the steam and medic rinse options, but as you can fit so much in it, it's not really a problem. bronze
I've had the same LG as long as I've owned a house which is 9 years and its still going strong with a lot of washes having 4 young children. I would say though I am also a dab hand at the small fixes mainly for the dishwasher though as the washing machine is so good. I use the whitegoods forum and look up all the faults on there so now know all about float switches and the like.
Aunty e
This is the cheapest i've found it - i'm trying to convince OH we'll save money by being able to do fewer washes. http://www.bhsdirect.co.uk/BH_Hoover_Appliances_Washing_Machine_Freestanding_30027449/version.asp?refsource=BHfroogle
docsquid
We have a Zanussi that is 9 years old and going strong - very pleased with it. I'd go with that or a Bosch.
whoopsie
I'm in the Zanussi or Bosch camps - though it doesn't sound like yours is quite dead yet!
The Dogmother
I used a Bosch at a friend's house and wasn't desperately impressed with the unintuitive controls.
Purplemaniacs
Well I have done three loads of washing, two it seemed to be ok, after cleaning filter just to be sure it wasn't that, made a funny noise when it spun but it did spin. Have just taken the third load out and it was dripping, clearly not spun at all. Now do I try to find a local person to repair it, or get a new one Thanks to everyone who has replied. little cluckers
Mine is a very very overworked Samsung!! It's now 4 1/2 years old and as there are 6 of us in the house it has really earned it's keep I do an average of 10 washes a week, it takes 7kgs of washing and it cost £279 but it's worth it's weight in gold. Chrissie I still say it's 99.99% the brushes that have gone. If you were near me I could recommend you two washing machine repair men who don't have a call out fee and don't rip you off either. Infact, depending on the machine you can do them youself. My old Hotpoint was easy to do but this Bosch isn't.
bluekarin
I was also going to say that when our machine doesn't spin its usually down to the outgoing drain pipe being bunged up with fluff and stuff. Usually a clear out of this, and the filter drawer (if you have one) helps.
chickencam
I had a Zanussi that lasted 10 years, so bought another which was useless from the word go. After 18 months on the recommendation of the repair man I bought a Miele. It cost over £500 but he said that even with my amount of washing, a couple of loads most days, it should last me 15 years. I am 8 years in and no regrets
