Couperman
Last Sunday we went to the plot to do a spot of harvesting as we urban farmer types do. As we happily gathered in the 322 courgettes that had reached the right size since Saturday we both scratched our arms and hands a bit as the plants fancy themselves as Cacti. Anyhow we both thought nothing of it until Tuesday when the insignificant little scratches turned into angry red scars with added puss-filled bubble wrap style blisters. (this seemed to coincide with exposure to sunshine) They are quite sore and still very red. They look a bit like the marks I get when I do my 'taking things out of the oven with my bare hands' trick. Has anyone else had any problems with Killer Poison Cactus Deadly Ivy Nightshade posing as Courgettes? And will our arms fall off? (Thud) (Thud) It is hard typing with your nose! Kev. Egluntyne
And will our arms fall off? (Thud) (Thud) It is hard typing with your nose! - at the words, not the predicament. Maybe some antihistamine cream might help?
ubereglu
Ouch. Would Aloe Vera help? I occasionally come up with a rash after cutting back pumpkin plants, but not normally courgettes. What are you going to do with all of them now Kev?
Charlottechicken
And will our arms fall off? (Thud) (Thud) I think your arms swell and turn into giant courgettes
Cinnamon
Yeah, they make me come up in a rash too. Nasty things - don't know why I bother really
Lesley
- sorry! We have problems as well - we use Miracle Gel (Cactus gel) or fresh Aloe Vera cut from the plant and it soon settles. Not sure once it has blistered though......... ....and wear a long sleeved shirt next time!!

Christian
Sounds like a great book Cathy. Sorry to hear about your arms Kev.
Couperman
The arms are ok now, I took precautions yesterday and wore my foundry gloves and apron . We are growing a few new varieties this year as well as some Patty Pans so they might be to blame. I have planted them at the entrance to the allotment near to where some stuff got vandalized last year. I hope no-one decides to have a pop at the courgette patch , I think they might put up more of a fight than the pumpkins and onions did last year. I would hate anyone to get blisterised whilst destroying the fruits of our work As far as what to do with all the courgettes...... (322 was a typo...it should have been 22.... I left it in for comedy value ) that is Cathy's domain as she decided that the 2 plants we couldn't keep up with last year were not enough and insisted on 16 plants. Kev. Lesley
But you know that if you only planted 2 plants then they would have been slugged!!! I thought I'd planted 10 plants but it's actually 14 - and all of them are doing well. Finger sized courgettes one day and mini marrows the next.......at least the pigs like them
chickencam
They multiply, i only planted four but I now definitely have 5 I get a rash from the leaves any member of the squash family, also from French Bean leaves and raspberries canes. my arms look like I self harm at this time of year, which I suppose in a manner of speaking I do, "Ooops, word censored!"ody makes me plant these things
Valkyrie
I have had that problem in the past - nasty isn't it? I then bought varieties without the hairs - even then it is still an irritant but not as bad. Conifers do that to me and quite a few other things too. Best be armed with antihistamine tablets and Anthisan cream.

chickencam
The courgette and tarragon soup in ATN uses 4 good sized courgettes for a 4 person seving, I made double last week and still have a fridge full, off to make muffins.

jennydavies
We had round courgettes the size of pumpkins I have never seen such growth from just three plants
sari
I love creamy courgette soup, and Hugh FW does a courgette soufflé, which I think is a vehicle for copious amounts of cheese My daughter is allergic to Christmas trees and their ilk ( we have one, despite being vaguely a multi faith Buddhist- Pagan household...have to do all the secular fest too..!) so watching her decorate dressed in longsleeves, gloves, ( 2 pairs cotton then rubber) and a jolly hat is rather funny.....We have a big bottle of Piriton on standby always, as they have inherited allergies from their dad's side of the family.....mould, dus,t, cats etc....I laughed in shock at the thought of 322 courgettes!!!
