scarlettohara
I needed new glasses and went to vision express (very good I thought) and have ordered some varifocals. They were hugely expensive although I did choose Chanel frames as I want to look nice in them not like Dame Edna Everage I'm too to let on how much they cost, how much do you all pay ? Couperwife
I've not long got some new glasses, my prescription seems two change every time I go I think my glasses with everything came to about £200 ish. I got 2 pairs for that and the thinner lenses cos I didn't want milk bottle bottoms. I wear them all day and every day, I cannot function without them so what ever I pay is money well spent Cathy X
bluekarin
I usually spend about £80 in Specsavers, and its usually when they have the free prescription sunglasses offer so I get two pairs for the price of one. My current pair of everyday glasses however are rimless and were about £180. I'm guessing Chanel ones from Vision Express are around £300+? Glasses are usually worn all day everyday so you need to be happy with what you choose. Enjoy them and don't worry about how much you have spent
Cinnamon
About £120 or so for my daughters specs, but she gets free lenses.
Looney
I think last time I paid about £150-£200 for two pairs on a deal. I wear them everyday so don't mind the price too much (although it is painful at the time) especially when you consider how much some items of clothing cost and last no-where near as long. stoice
I'm really lucky in that we have a lady who runs a market stall every saturday that sells glasses! No joke. All the names and styles the major chains sell and the standard lenses are free (Just pay for frames). Varifocals, sunglasses tints and thiner lenses are extra but only by about £30-£50. Pop round with your prescription, pick your frames and come back the following week to collect and pay for them. My brother got a pair of police glasses and jaguar prescription sunglasses for £75 the pair. Bargain.
Charlottechicken
I go to an independant optician next to my place of work and get a free eye test every year. I paid £440 for a pair of new specs and replacement photochromatic lenses in an old pair. All my specs have high index lenses. It is probably expensive but I have no problems as the dispensing optician is brilliant and I have never had to go back to get them adjusted. He also knows which colours and shapes fit which faces, so I don't spend ages trying on frames. The last pair he fitted me I wore for 6 years. I have a fairly high prescription now too. I am tempted to try Specsavers next time A friend is really short sighted and also has varifocals, she has been paying almost £500 a pair for her specs for the past 10 years, but goes to Boots, and other high street opticians. As her specs are so expensive she can never get an offer, they always refuse
jlo
Too much really but - like others - they are worn most of the time. One time I forgot to wear contact lenses for choosing the glasses and I am so short sighted that I can't even see myself in the mirror. That was a particularly expensive pair as I hated them once I could see them!

I've even tried taking a photo of yourself with the camera to see what they look like, but the the angle is always wrong, so they don't look any better
Chickvic
My last pair cost me £280, with transition lenses. I have poor eyesight (thanks to my mother!) and it won't be long before my glasses get more expensive but I can have free eye tests

They were hugely expensive although I did choose Chanel frames as I want to look nice in them not like Dame Edna Everage I'm too to let on how much they cost, how much do you all pay ? If you have good varifocal lenses, and decent frames, they are worth it in the long run, and I'd be surprised if they were less than £300/£400. A friend (who budgets carefully) spent £700 recently, which surprised me, but they are all day everyday and suit her. It's easier to pay much less for single vision, but good varifocals do cost a lot. So, unless you spent much more than that, you probably paid the going rate. Better to splash out on a pair you enjoy wearing than buying cheaper ones that disappoint. If you can see well, feel comfortable, and like the look, it was a good investment, enjoy them. scarlettohara
Well I feel better now as they were just over £400 (I have the more expensive lens bit for reading as I read a lot) but they are lovely and I will be able to have new lenses put in if my prescription changes. They can be my 50th birthday present to myself
goodinparts
I seem to be having a phase of losing glasses, - so am glad to have discovered a couple of websites which do perfectly reasonable glasses for under £50. I mostly wear contact lenses, but bought one pair of glasses last month for the princely sum of £20 (they use your current prescription if it's under 2 yrs old - which mine was) They do designer frames too, but I'm too mean to buy them (need money for this hen habit I have, you know...!) Goosey Lucy
Umm...£600 or thereabouts However these are superb varifocals, The frames really suit me, my specs go on when I step out of bed and don't come off til I get back in at night. Finally I can read, crochet, watch tv, drive, do cross stitch and most importantly walk along the street without tripping over things. I can honestly say they are worth every penny, they've given me my confidence back.
Shirl
I paid about £150 but are probably the most expensive glasses mentioned because I wore them twice before I decided I really don't lik them. I settle for stretching my arms a little further so I can read although it is becoming increasingly difficult.
Janty
I got so excited when the optician told me that I had to start wearing glasses that I treated myself to a pair of Gucci with transition lenses. They were extremely expensive (as far as I was concerned) but I did get another pair free. Then I bought two more pairs (another BOGOF) deal. Then I bought another pair in the sale. If my prescription hasn't changed next time I'd like a green pair and a red pair.
Willow
Mine used to be about £500 because I'd go for basic frames the last quote my husband got was £600 But my eyes have now been fixed as have OH so when we need reading glasses we should be able to get £10 ones from tesco or boots or similar. My YS is going to need high density glass very soon and I'm so cross as we'll have to pay the full amount for him as he's just very short sighted and he isn't even close to teens yet so his eyes change every few months. We've spent many many £1000's on glasses and lens over the years. I wasted a few hundred on contacts I barely wore the last year or so as I think my eyes just couldn't cope with lens any more but the optician kept convincing me the latest (most expensive) technology would be comfortable . tbh I hate opticians I always preferred to go to the dentist than the opticians - love eye surgeons though
Kirstine
I've probably paid about £200 - £250 the last 3 times I've had glasses. For that I get stylish and durable frames (last up to 5 years) and thinnish lenses - otherwise I would have jam-jars, but don't need bi- or vari-focals (yet). The last time I got 2 pairs from Specsavers on a BOGOF. My prescription is fairly stable and I have moved to contact lenses most days so I hope these specs will last me another few years. As others have said, if they are going to be worn all day every day for years, it is worth getting them right and making an investment. Snowy
I hate hate hate wearing glasses and hate even more having to spend money on them I spend the absolute minimum so they usually look dire, but as I only wear them when I really really have to, I don't care I usually get the £50 BOGOF ones from specsavers. Clur
Last pair I bought cost £250. I go to an independent optician, need compressed lenses (am a -7.5 prescription) and bought a sesigner frame. The nice optician gave me a £50 discount, so I was very happy!
mags
just glasses for reading and got 2 pairs for £93 & £43 the second pair was on an offer. mags
Bramble
My prescription changes every year so I found it was getting very expensive even just to have the lenses changed in my frames. This year I decided to look on the net for my spare pair and got sum from select specs for £13(!) inc p&p. Most people say they actually look nicer than my "proper pair" and I'll certainly be ordering from them again.
Olly
I wear mine all day, every day and I prefer rimless which are more expensive. My last pair was about £700, the frame is Lindberg and they are varifocal and extra-thin, because one eye is 6 dioptre and they'd be like bottle glass otherwise. I did wince a bit, but if you spread that cost over the number of days worn, they are probably the best value item in my wardrobe! One of the reasons I go to an independent optician is because I see the same optician every time, he knows my eyes and he also helps me choose frames. He spent ages measuring my face and checking the angle of my eyes - when these arrived they were perfect, as the varifocal bit is set in just the right place. Unfortunately I hadn't appreciated that the long-sighted bit could go on deteriorating, so 18 months later I am once again struggling to read small print. I wore contact lenses from age 15 to about age 40, but have given up on them in the last few years as the vision never seems as good, and now I'd need reading glasses anyway. Egluntyne
I've recently changed to a local independent optician, having been flogged all sorts of products that I didn't need by a high street chain. It turns out that my distance vision is well within legal driving limits, and the all singing, all dancing varifocals that has cost me over £300 a year ago were a complete waste of time, and were making things worse. I knew I could see better without them for everything except reading. Neither did I need the toric contact lenses, or any contact lenses at all for that matter, as I hadn't got astigmatism, as they had said. Turns out that I just needed some readers which cost me £170, and that was only because I wanted the purple ones. My second 'emergency' pair were £49. scarlettohara
If I had gone for the extra thin lenses mine would have been over £600 too, I hated my old ones and couldn't read in them as the gap was too narrow. It will be so nice to be able to see the tv guide onscreen and subtitles The optician worked mine out over 24 months which as you say puts it into perspective. Thanks for all your replies
