chicken bark
Just heard on the news that the lady who put the cat into the bin has only been fined £250. I hope I missed the bit where they said she would go to prison or some other stronger punishment.
The Dogmother
I saw that too - at least they returned a guilty verdict though and her life has been made hell.
Seagazer
I think she's been banned from owning any animals for 5 years. Did she ever say why she did it?
MarkBevBen
just heard this in the car too

Bramble
£250 is just ridiculous - hardly worth taking to Court ... that said, I'm not sure how I'd cope if I was banned from keeping animals for five years I'd be devastated, that would be much more of a punishment for me than a fine or even prison, i think? sari
Prison is hardly a suitable punishment let's consider this rationally for a moment. , Yes what she did is disgraceful...my cat once came home with an airgun pellet in his side, and I was devastated at the pain he had to go through. But prison is a place for serious criminals, not for a woman who did something stupid in a moment of madness. She was under alot of stress at the time ( apparently, her father was seriously ill) and we all can see that in moments of stress we lack clarity of thought. Prison should be a place for peole who commit serious acts, whether against people, animals or property, and other punishments be used, in proportion to the crime. Willow
I agree with Sari. I love our cats, they are very much part of the family and I would be very upset and cross if anyone did something similar to them. But she did something stupid and thoughtless that could (but didn't) have serious consequences whilst under stress and has been pilloried in the press as a result. I feel she has been punished enough and people committing more serious acts of animal cruelty get away with lesser punishments.
Ain't Nobody Here
She apparently has to pay court costs of over £1,000 too.
sari
Gosh. my employer took me to court over Maternity pay, as they, without going into dull details, basically closed my Unit when I was on Mat leave, and due to me being PND, I didn't go through all the hoops I was supposed to....after a year on Mat leave, I tried to go back to work, to find no job.So I had to pay back all my Mat leave plus the legal costs. Still trying to pay off the credit card.

Christian
I don't think sari is suggesting for a second that her actions were ok, as she was suffering from stress. Just that prison is not a suitable punishment.
Cinnamon
Totally agree with Sari on this one. Just a little bit of perspective is needed when you think of all the truly dreadful crimes committed on a daily basis
Alis girls
Prison is not the place - Ithink the fact that we all know who she is will be punishment enough - stress is no excuse - i feel permanantly stressed but wouldnt put any animal in a bin or any other recepticle for that matter. Having said that there are a few people i could find space for in my bin if I could muster up the energy to lift them in ................. I am kidding honest - she will get her just desserts - kids and adults verbally abusing her something the British public seem to be good at. debbier
I certainly don't condone what she did, but agree with the sentiments that prison was not appropriate for her.
jlo
The magistrates would have had to follow the guideline for sentencing for this type of offence and as it was a single impulsive act that (thankfully!) caused little injury, their sentence would be a fine up to a community order. She will have received some credit for pleading guilty. I haven't seen the reports but I think she must have pleaded guilty because (a) she clearly was!! and (b) had there been a trial, it wouldn't have taken place so quickly! It really was the most bizarre behaviour and I don't for a second condone it. I only hope that it isn't something that she has been doing on a regular basis! I agree with what others have said though - prison isn't the place for her. It always amazes me at court that, day after day, we have people in who have done awful things to other humans but, the minute there is a sniff of an animal case, the press descend en masse. chicken bark
I know I mentioned prison in my first post but meant I felt she needed some other punishment not just a fine. Stress is an underrated condition and can make you do odd things but that said I felt she needed a punishment that would deter others from doing something similar. It is horrible to think what really goes on out there in the big bad world. After all what happens that doesn't get caught on CCTV. Doesn't bear thinking about.
