Text speak

Recommended Posts

Once I was at a friends house and my mum texted me saying 'When r u coming home?' My friend was reading over my shoulder and was amazed that my mum used text speak

I use predictive :D

What's even worse is when people use text speak on computers :wall: My school has this thing called MLE, and it's basically an online workspace where you can uplaod work etc, and the teachers have to constantly remind the kids to use comprehendable English  "Wen iz dis wrk due inn?" "Thank you (name) for using MLE but can I please remind you not to use text speak when you are on here"

My mum has invented her own "text speak" on the mobile and it takes me ages to work out what on earth she's going on about!:lol:

BeckyBoo

You're lucky it's only txt spk....

My mum's verbal shorthand has got shorter as she has got older and now at 86 fewer people understand her....bless

Made worse as she is very Polish even though she has lived in the UK for 62 years

I hate it with a passion.

Me too. I invariably call people back to chat to them rather then sending a text... as my friends on here know. They're now used to one word text answers if I don't have time to ring them.

Luckily my mother has no idea how to send a text - just turning her mobile on is an achievement!

My Nan (of all people!) is the worst!! It's quite funny, whenever we get a text from her we have to all gather round the phone trying to translate it! She doesn't use punctuation either, so one topic rolls onto the next and gets you so confused! She shortens words beyond belief.

I had to write a 1,000 word essay on text speaking for 10% of my english GCSE....

On text speak or in text speak?

I also can't stand text speak. I get so confused when people send me text messages with all these strange heiroglyphics :? I have had a go at sending a text in text speak... but it took me longer than if I'd written the darned thing out properly!:lol:

I hate it too. My sister sends me texts made up of lots of sentences all joined together with no full stops. Takes me ages to decipher what she has said before I can reply  I have occasionally tried to write something in text speak but then have to go over it again to add all the missed out letters  I can read it though, so maybe if I'd ever learnt short hand, I might have been good at it

I try really hard not to...on the forum on which I'm a Mod, when we are dealing with crises, we use a sort of text speak shorthand, so it's quicker to send messages. I do loathe it, as I loathe the white kids who talk in that "Ja-fake-an" accent..I have a horrible Midlands accent, but its all my own... :o I love a good accent, Regional or National.....I used to nurse a man from Barbados, with a beautiful accent.

I don't tend to use text speak - especially now I have my new iphone!

I was terribly lazy the other day though. My daughter was upstairs and I just CBA  to walk upstairs so I texted her! How  is that!?

I send my ED messages via Facebook, and have little chats with her, when she is upstairs. Sometimes, even when she is in the same room :oops:

On a mobile phone, it is understandable to use text speak, those buttons can be fiddly and may take a while to string together a proper sentence. But, using text speak on a computer is plain LAZY, you have a full QWERTY keyboard at your disposal, with all the letters of the alphabet on different keys (not 3 on the same key, like on mobile phones) so USE THEM.
