Today my chickens are terrified of me :(

Recommended Posts

Hello. I was out in the garden earlier while they were F/Ring and I picked up a big bag of compost. The girls all ran away making that really loud alert noise they make, and they all dived into the netting as if they were desperately trying to escape! I put the bag back down and they were still making the noise so I gave them some meal worms but they are still really nervous of me and not their normal selves! They have never been this bad, they were walking around us while we were making their WIR with loud drills and big planks of wood and they were fine!! The bag is orange though so I'm thinking they think it was a fox :? Anyone else had a similar experience?

I shouldn't worry, they'll settle back down :D

My girls have to contend with all manner of noise both from us and our neighbours! They quickly grow accustomed :D

I have a bok bok noise that I make whenever I have treats for them. My neighbours must think I'm potty but whenever I make the noise, marauding chooks appear from every direction. So when I pick up rocks, compost bags etc, I make the noise and they all come to get at the worms and beasties lurking beneath :D

I've been in the garden all day doing photography cwk so they have calmed down a lot now! I think thats a good idea to get them trained to a noise, I have them trained to the shake a meal worm pot but obviously I don't always have that to hand! Hopefully they will be fine with me when I get them trained :D Thanks for your replies :)

as above they will settle down. Mine blamed me for the Icecream van pulling up outside my house and setting his jingle off. they all legged it to the back of the garden and hid in the bushes. They wouldnt believe the noise was nothing to do with me

 We haven't had the ice cream van yet - oh dear if we do  Maybe an ice cream will shut them up ha ha

i`m researching about getting chickens but i`m hubbys got a harley davidson would they ever get use to this fireing up several times a week :?:

Funny that - my neighbour had his out today! He went out on it after the 'chicken scaring' incident (they were about 10meters away) and they bobbed their heads up when it started but then just carried on normally.

... actually I have no idea if its a harley davidson... but it's a big noisy bike :anxious::lol:

I got a petrol lawn mower that does not bother them but an Harley is loud but I would not let that stop you from getting chickens as it might not effect them all the best

Mine went crackers last weekend, and one managed to get onto the fence seperating us from our neighbour, when I started up the mower. They were fine with it last year. We also get quite a few ambulances on the main road near us, and loud bikes going up the hill, but they don't bat an eyelid about them anymore as they are used to the noise. I guess sometimes they feel like being drama queens, and other times they can't be bothered :-)

My girls go loopy if the Glug & Grub are moved - they bok bok and go & hide in the Eglu :lol:

I think it's because I always put them in when the girls are still in the Eglu ( their door is shut) in the morning, so when they accidentally knock it off or I move them they don't realise they aren't fixed & it frightens them!

Daft chooks! They only eat & drink out of them every day!!

Mine are fine with our motorbike - an old (noisy) Norton Commando, even though it's started up in the garden when they're out.

Plus we have a field right behind our fence - they look up when the tractor/combine comes close but soon get used to it.

Funny you should say about the bag being orange. Some friends of mine have geese and when the paperboy calls at their house with his big day-glo orange satchel the geese go absolutely ape-poo.

The poor boy has learned to leave the bag at the gate now!

My parrot goes insane when he see the postman, orange high vis - he shouts at him non stop until he cannot see him any longer!!
