poppy ben grace
Hi all, we are thinking of getting a trio of pekin bantams from minimeadows farm on friday and really want to pick your brains before we take the plunge. The dilema is housing. I keep my chooks in a very large wir and cube so will not be mixing the bantams as i know this is unfair to them, so they will be in maybe an ark(6 foot long, 3 foot wide) with freeranging in the garden. would this be ok? The chap at mimimeadows was very helpful and we are thinking of buying the ark from there. He also said thet pekin bantams are kinder to the garden than chooks, is this true?Any advice would be great, this is a big deal to me and i want them to have a good life if i choose to buy them. madchickenlady
Hi As you can see from my signature, I have a few pekins The size or ark you're looking at is fine if they'll also have free range time They are kinder to the garden in many ways, for example I still have a lawn , but they still nibble and squash plants given half a chance. They are wonderful characters though, and I'd definitely recommend them
fluffy chick
Ditto I love pekins! Your ark sounds fine to me, especially if they have fr time too. They are kinder to the garden than my hybrids but that's not saying much !
goodinparts
Did you go to Mini Meadows? I know you had a sad weekend with your lovely ex-batt but hope that maybe some fluffy pekin ladies will have nested with you to ease the hurt. We'd love to know who you got - and pics too, of course...but I was also wondering if you noticed if Ben had more faverolles yet? I'm due to collect a couple from him later on either late May or June and am getting excited already...
Mollie333
Hi, As you can see in my signature, i have a fair few Pekins! i have both large fowl Hybrids, Wyandotte bantam, Polish bantam and all my Pekins including two cockerels together! It's not a problem with me. Pekins are lovely little characters, that run space would be fine. They do tend to dustbathe in soil, plant pots, anywhere they can find that looks nice, mine do like to perch though, so a few strong sticks in the Ark run may be nice for them. As with any run, make sure it's strong mesh rather than flimsey wire, foxes can bite through this, and also if you are putting the ark run on grass, i'd protect them by putting slabs around the sides, so nothing can dig under. Goodluck!
Griffin
Is it just my Pekins who are noisy? Screechy little madams

They are beautiful and we are so pleased with them! I managed to get an eglu in the end so am really happy as i can extend the run when funds allow. Poor little things have had to take a back seat for now but have managed to spend some time with them today, they are very wary of me at the moment but am sure they will get to know me soon enough! I didnt see any faverolles but it is such a great place, i was really impressed with the set up and there is a great selection of birds. Ben is a smashing chap (very easy on the eyes ladies!) and was really helpful, cant recommend enough. Here is a pic of the girls will post more when i have a bit more time. lucy lavender and bertha buff! millie the mille fleur

I've decided to get another 'flock' and wanted some big eggs too, I'll probably end up with cochins as they look like big pekins!

Chortle Chook
What dear little creatures and so pretty. Yes, mum-2-olly, out of curiosity, what did put you off bantams? I know I've always wanted some 'big, serious' chickens, but for now, needs must and smallests it is.

They dont seem to trash the garden as much as the big girls(time will tell i guess), i cant wait to let them out to have a bit of fr time, keeping them in for now until they get used to me a bit more! have ordered the run extension as they are on offer at the moment( it would've been rude not to!).
