Old Speckled Hen
Following on Cinnamon's 'Omlet's must read' and how much it made her laugh I wondered what books ever made you laugh out loud........in public. Not the most cerebral read I would be the first to say but hey.....there's no s"Ooops, word censored!"bery in reading/not reading any publication .... ......... I fell about laughing on the Tube reading Tom Sharpe. How about you lot?
sadietoo
Tom Sharpe for me too OSH...and also some of the Janet Evanovitch Stephanie Plum books
BarbaraJ
Michael Mcintyre Autobiography
majorbloodnock
There have been several that had that effect on me. More Terry Pratchett titles than I can remember, for instance, but I was pleasantly surprised to find Iain Banks' book "Espedair Street" managed it too. I'll admit to a good few audible sniggers courtesy of Spike Milligan as well.
clootie
Tom Sharpe for me too but it was on the bus, not the tube!
snowberry
I love the Plum series by Evanovich; I want to be Stephanie Plum! Michael McIntyre autobiography made me roar, I love him to bits (have you got a man drawer? We have!) One of the best books for me is 'Watermelon' by Marion Keyes; I read the first few pages inthe bookshop all those years ago & fell about laughing. When I got home I realised that the bit that had made me laugh was the forward! The rest of the book didn't disappoint either!
patsylabrador
Terry Pratchett for me too. Especially the ones with Nanny & Pewsey Ogg, they remind me of people I grew up amongst in wiltshire village.
keyhole kate
Any Marion keys and Frank Skinners autobiography had me crying and chocking with laughter
Tweety
Lady Addle Remembers by Mary Dunn was on the radio as I was driving into work one morning. I almost crashed the car several times I was laughing so much, it's really very funny!
PurpleTree
Terry Pratchett here too & the Hitchhikers Guide (the trilogy in four parts ). I always find that if a book has 'made me laugh out loud' on the cover, I never laugh once, is that just me?
tinamc
Michael Mcintyre Autobiography Same here!
Daphne
French Revolutions by somebody or other - about him cycling through France following the route of the Tour de France and his adventures and frustrations. I nearly died through asphixiation by stuffing my hand in my mouth or chewing a hankie trying not to laugh over several days on the hushed early morning train full of besuited bankers. More recently, Lynn Truss's Get Her off the Pitch (memories from her days as a sports reporter), has had me guffawing, especially as I can hear her voice reading the book out loud, but now I work at home thank goodness so "Ooops, word censored!"ody can hear me
craftyhunnypie
I remember laughing years ago at 'The Darling Buds of May' books. It was just Pa Larkin being a randy, dirty old man that used to make me laugh. I also laughed at Clive James' autobiography description of when he made a billy cart. Cinnamon
Bill Bryson has made me hoot with laughter many times - his dry sense of humour really appeals to me,especially when he uses the term 'lively' to describe something, from a shirt to a moustache I actually had to absent myself from the poolside once over one of his books - 'A walk in the woods' I think, as I was crying with that silent, doubled up,teary laughter, where you can't even breathe properly
Sam Palmer
Lots of Terry Pratchett's books, but especially Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome. I've read it so many times and still laugh out load.
Ms Marple
Most of BIll Bryson and also lots of parts of Captain Corelli's Mandolin- when that Italian army are more preoccupied with choir practice than war and hold choir practice in the toilet tent. It conjures up such a peculiar image in my mind
Chickendoodle
Bill Bryson for me too - particular memories of being in a doctors waiting room reading a chapter in his book about Australia where he is describing a cricket match. I was sitting there with tears of laughter rolling down my face and I think people thought I should perhaps be in the phychiatric ward!!! His are the only books I have ever re-read more than once The James Herriott books which I read in the 70's - don't know how funny they would be now though All of the Shopaholic series David Niven's autobiographies Marion Keyes for me too - her books are always funny but poignant The Matt Rudd books -can't remember the names exactly but I think the second one is called Matt's Progress
Lesley
Terry Pratchett and Bill Bryson for me as well - I mostly read in bed and try to keep it silent but then the bed shakes and I wake OH anyway
rabbitfluff
Another one for Bill Bryson here and a line from the deliciously mad Tom Baker's autobiography had me making some very strange noises while I failed miserably to stifle my laughter. Douglas Adams as well and The Ascent of Rum Doodle, which is just my level of silliness.
Cinnamon
The Matt Rudd books -can't remember the names exactly but I think the second one is called Matt's Progress Williams progress - I believe he buys an Eglu Love Matt Rudd. I mentioned the book 'Don't lean out the window' on another thread, which made me laugh a lot too, especially when the boys travelling through Europe start equating the prices in each country to how much a McDonalds Cheeseburger costs there 'Tis very cheap on Kindle, this book, & well worth a read. Groovychook
The most recent book for me to make me laugh out loud was 'Starter for Ten' by David Nicholls. I cried laughing during parts of that read!
little cluckers
Gervaise Phinn made me laugh out loud. He's like James Herriot but a school inspector...very funny. Also Tony Hawks....not the skater (or whatever he is) but the comedian - Round Ireland with a Fridge, Playing Tennis with The Moldovans and A Piano in the Pyrenees are great but I didn't enjoy One Hit Wonderland. He accepts silly challenges / bets and tells the story of the ensuing journey...great fun
Deb Dav
The series of books that constantly make me laugh out loud are the Agatha Raisin books by M.C. Beaton (author of Hamish MacBeth). Retiring to a Cotswold village after a successful career in PR in London, Agatha accidentally becomes an amateur detective but it is the antics in her love life that are a scream plus older women (50+) can relate to her actions!!! An incident in a pub latrine in which Agatha changes a light bulb just to make sure her makeup is correct before she goes out to the love of her life won't fail to make you LOL
kitbag
'Life...with no breaks' by Nick Spalding! Basically a man called Nick sat down and wrote about his life for a long time (can't remember how much!) with no breaks. It's without a doubt the funniest book I have ever read! I think it's only available on the kindle though!
Old Speckled Hen
Great.... I now have a list of books to look at at......never could get into Pratchett though I've bought French Revolution for hubby, who's a keen cyclist and watches the Tour, for an anniversary prezzie.
