Cinnamon
I have just read the most wonderful book 'Chickens,Mules & two old fools' by Victoria Twead,& would like to recommend it to all you chickeny people out there. For anyone with a Kindle, its just £2.49 at the moment! Absolutely hilarious descriptions & accounts of hens & it anyone has a bantam cockerel as I have,a certain chapter will ring VERY true! Do give it a go - it is laugh out loud funny, jolly, optomistic & even has some lovely sounding Spanish recipes in there too

bigmommasally
Brilliant book, downloaded it this morning and haven't been able to put it down. Naughty though as reading a book is not what I planned to do today. I have laughed out loud at some of the chicken antics and earthquake/peaches tale. Thanks for recommending it

Seagazer
Can heartily recommend all of the books recommended on here - finished Chickens, Mules etc the other night. The bit describing the chickens getting used to each other was so true. A really lovely read. I'm so glad they decided to stay in Spain. I love Victoria Hislop's books and have read both. craftyhunnypie
I've read 2 chickens, a mule. It really is fab! I read it after recommendation by Cinnamon. I wll now download The island tonight. Have been wondering what to download. As in a week I have read 2 chickens.., Some vampire novel ( the light of sun ??) - Scary Mary ( quite enjoyed) & Miss Peregrines school for peculiar people. I thoroughly enjoyed Miss Peregrine's school - bit of a sudden ending, but I was engrossed - was to do with peculiars & time travel. My nextbook was going to be Tuk tuk something or other about touring the road ina 3 wheeled tuk tuk!!! I think I'd like to read The island first. The Dogmother
I'll send you mine Clare pm me your address Ooo, thanks Plum, will do. My library card has run out and I was thinking of renewing it, but I only really get to read once or twice a year, so it seems daft as it will run out again in such a short time
Ms Marple
The island is great. I can lend a copy if any one wants. Also if this is going slightly random could I suggest 'Old Filth' and 'The Man in the Wooden Hat' both by Jane Gardam. Just read these with my book group and LOVED them both. Read Old Filth first though. They are the same story from his side and then hers. Similar but very different at the same time.
Cinnamon
Shame they are not available on Kindle Ms Marple, although I have put in a request. Other great books: 'Major Pettigrews last Stand' - a lovely, very British tale of an elderly Major & his deep affection for the Indian lady who owns the little shop in their small village. 'Don't Lean Out The Window' by Stewart Ferris - Very funny true story of 3 lads who go inter railing & busking around Europe. Just out on Kindle,& costs just a couple of pounds 'When God was a Rabbit' - slightly odd but evocative story of childhood, love & loss And if you like a bit of Chick-Lit,then anything by Paige Toon,Tricia Ashley,Lisa Jewell, Matt Dunn,Mike Gayle & Matt Rudd are always good I think it was Matt Rudds book where his character bought an Eglu...................... The everyone should read what I consider to be amazing books- 'One Day', 'Memoirs of a Geisha', The Da Vinci Code','The Other Boleyn Girl' ,The Shardlake series by CJ Sansom, ANY Bill Bryson, 'The Red Tent', 'The Household guide to Dying'....................I could go on & on
bigmommasally
Has anyone read The Slap? I've just finished it and absolutely hated it, I think it one of the most vile books I've ever read and would be interested for others opinions. I too loved The Island, Memoirs of a Geisha, 'The Other Boleyn Girl' ,The Shardlake series by CJ Sansom. Time Travellers wife is my all time favourite book, also love Ken Follets books PIllars of the Earth and World without End.I'm looking forward to reading his new one when its out on Kindle. bigmommasally
Well let me know what you think when you've read it.
Egluntyne
I will. Don't hold your breath, I've just started the book recommended by Cinnamon at the top of this thread.
Ms Marple
Ooo. When A thread like this starts I just want to know more and more and wish I could read faster . I like the sound of Major Pettigrew's Last Stand Cinnamon- my two books are linked to being Raj orphans. Can we make a tally chart or something similar for best loved books perhaps, as sometimes when confronted with two many titles I don't know where to start. I have realised from here that many of us come to certain books at different times eg I read The Island quite a long time ago IN 2006 when it was first published. Seagazer
Just quickly had a look at The Slap on Amazon and its really split the readers over whether its any good or not. I think the original idea of a man slapping somebody else's child sounds as if it could be a really interesting read (socially obviously - never a good idea to slap any child ) but it sounds as if this issue is dealt with rather quickly and then it moves on to other matters. Hmm I might wait and see if the price comes down first.
chickweed
If you enjoyed 'Chickens, Mules and Two old Fools' you will love 'Snowball Oranges, one Mallorcan winter' by Peter Kerr. It's about a Scottish couple and their sons who go to live in the mountains of Mallorca. It is only 99p from Kindle. I have read it a couple times in paper back and it so funny. There is a sequel called 'Manana, Manana, one Mallorcan summer' by the same author. Good holiday reading
Cinnamon
Agreed,'Snowball Oranges' is a fab read - I have the paperback here in my office & will download the Kindle edition now,as its cheap BUT my all time favourite 'moving to sunnier climes' read is 'Driving over lemon' by Chris Stewart, which is not available on Kindle yet. He used to be the drummer in Genesis, but he left, then they hit it big Brilliantly funny man & a wonderful, wonderful read.
