Amy Winehouse

Recommended Posts

Very sad, however I would never ever have let my young children listen/or watch her, she was certainly no role model!!

We should still have parental control over what our young children watch.

 I shall make sure I listen to only Sir Cliff Richard in the car from now on

My favourite singer, Michael Hutchence killed himself in a drug induced haze. It looks as if Amy Winehouse probably did the same. If anything, my choice of listening material has taught my children not to take drugs because nothing good ever comes of it. We've spoken openly about the risks, it's not in the slightest been glamorized.

VERY well said

Michael was a fave of mine too,and was just divine.

Amy was a unique talent, despite her troubles.

I too believe in openness and much talking with my children, rather than the banning of anyone or anything that may be a bad influence.

That is the best way for lessons to be learnt.

Scarlett this is so true. I was sad but not surprised, it is a terrible waste of that talent but she'd thrown away the talent anyway. I fear there is a view you can take drugs and go into rehab and it will all be ok.

Yep, rehab is not something to be taken lightly- I would expect it involves immense willpower too. I'm not sure Amy Winehouse really wanted to be clean/dry - some people are seemingly built to self-destruct.

You are quite right, my friends liked taking drugs and made the decision, Amy Winehouse made the same one - all this poor Amy just gets my goat I'm afraid, I'm not denying she had a lovely voice, I doubt if she was stupid but ultimately she had to decide :?

It's very sad and I lost a friend to a drugs OD when I was at art school; they thought it made them look cool  I very rarely censor Rosie taste in music, I feel that she's sensible enough (mostly) and educated about the risks to make her own mind up. I'm no believer in wrapping children i cotton wool.

You know, I just came on to post that same thing Cheryl...

“Now Amy Winehouse is dead, like many others whose unnecessary deaths have been retrospectively romanticised, at 27 years old. Whether this tragedy was preventable or not is now irrelevant. It is not preventable today. We have lost a beautiful and talented woman to this disease. Not all addicts have Amy’s incredible talent. Or Kurt’s or Jimi’s or Janis’s, some people just get the affliction. All we can do is adapt the way we view this condition, not as a crime or a romantic affectation but as a disease that will kill. We need to review the way society treats addicts, not as criminals but as sick people in need of care. We need to look at the way our government funds rehabilitation. It is cheaper to rehabilitate an addict than to send them to prison, so criminalisation doesn’t even make economic sense. Not all of us know someone with the incredible talent that Amy had but we all know drunks and junkies and they all need help and the help is out there. All they have to do is pick up the phone and make the call. Or not. Either way, there will be a phone call.”

Russell Brand

:( RIP...

We've been away and hadn't seen any news so it was a complete shock to see what had happened. I loved Amy's singing and had Rehab as my ringtone for ages. It is such a tragic waste of a talented young woman. I did always think that she had a doomed life and wouldn't make old bones but I always hoped she'd surprise me by recovering. RIP Amy :(

So very sad. Talented people like Amy Winehouse was and Russel Brand is should never be written off or avoided because of their addiction. I have no personal experience to call upon, but clearly as a society we cannot just hope this terrible problem will go away.

R.I.P Amy - you will be much missed.

 Not quite what i was getting at really Griffin and Cinnamon, it is rather extreme going from Amy Winehouse to Sir Cliff Richard.... .I am also not saying anyone is glamorizing her life. To talk openly about drugs, alcohol and other abuse/issues in life with children is very good, that is what I do for a living and cannot stress the importance of doing so with children however I was simply saying parental control is sadly something that is lacking in some areas now. This should NOT be confused with banning things/people/music or telling your children what they can and cannot watch/listen to. It is about guidance and teaching them right from wrong at age appropriate stages in their life and of course every child is different and reach different stages at different ages. :|

Nice tweet from Gene Simmons from KISS (himself a strong hater of drugs & alcohol, in fact he says he has never touched either, ever):-

"RIP, Amy. So young & talented. So sad. We condemn murderers. We never condemn drugs.

It's time to identify the Black Plague in the world. Drugs. It is the enemy."

I'd disagree - you can have parental controls on pretty much all media these days - and films come with age guidelines and music comes with 'parental guidance' warnings - the industry is bound to provide you with those tools as they have a responsibility to protect young people from inappropriate content, to say that not enough is available is odd. My dad allowed me to watch 12s at the age of 10, 15s at 13 and 18s at 16, that was his choice and he was able to do that.

More importantly you can't censor someone's life through censoring their music. It's a futile attempt to 'protect' children from that sort of lifestyle - and I remember only striving more to listen to and watch things I wasn't 'allowed' to, out of curiosity and rebellion.

I heard the news whilst eating out the other evening - the waiter lad told us. We weren't that surprised, but we loved her music Our favourite being 'back to black'.

On Sunday, my family came over to us & we went into Aberystwyth. Whilst sat on South Beach, we witnessed a female drugs abuser in total ' drugged up' state. It was absolutely terrifying! Even a man from an apartment opposite the beach came out to her to help, saying he was a counsellor. She was having none of it - make up all smeared, bad bruises on her, blood on her legs from where she'd fell. She fell of the small sea walkway ledge onto the beach several times - she was sobbing her heart out permanently. She was also walking to the sea a lot. But I have never seen anyone with so much anger & aggression. The counsellor man gave up in the end - saying that "he tried".

We were a bit fearful of her so we left the beach.

We later saw her walking in the town with 2 other male ' drug abusers' drinking a bottle of Jack Daniels.

This woman was sooo painfully thin too. I somehow don't think she will have a long life. Very sad, but her choice. We all have troubles occassionally, but we pull ourselves together & get through. These people take it a few steps further& don't get through.
