What do you use for extra housing?

Recommended Posts

there are many wooden coops, which you can get cheaply all which will do the job however cleaning out on some of them is a little difficult, however if you are looking for another plastic housing there are lots too, however they are quite exspensive i think there was a topic on one of the cheaper/smaller versions of a plastic coop.

i Hope that helps.

I know not everyone can afford this but I have ordered an Eglu Go as there is £50 off this week. I want to get some ex-battery hens and thought this would be ideal for quarantine purposes. I will then be able to introduce them slowely to my other girls. I found the whole introduction thing very stressfull last time. I was looking out for a classic on ebay but they go for nearly £300 so I may as well buy a new Go. :D

This is the one I bought, there were cheaper options but this has a nest box and perches which the others didn't. Don't suppose it will last that long but I have an ex-bat who has decided she prefers to sleep in a rabbit hutch so thought she would appreciate this :D Mine will be seagrass green.

Mmm yes thanks guys, some great ideas. I like the wooden one but would want a run to keep them separate. Not sure about the solway, it looks a bit big and the run is another 100 I think. Swayed by the offer on the !gored! but OH might have a fit! Just getting over the cost of the omlet WIR...

I've just use a folding metal dog cage, used electrical ties to hold purches in place. It has a sliding tray for cleaning and I coved 3 side & the top with an old garden bench cover. Total cost £30 on ebay. It's now folden flat in the shed till next time.

Or will they

I have a pet carrier and a large dog crate. The baby banties are sleeping in the dog crate at the moment, in the greenhouse (with doors and windows wide open), they have a cardboard box to sleep in with a roosting bar pushed through holes either side. Very heath robinson, but it will do as a temporary measure!

I've got a collection - rabbit ark, rabbit run (both currently occupied by quail), plus a tortoise cage which I use inside the WIR if I need to keep a chook still or resting. when I got the exbatts I used the rabbit run and made a nesting box from a plastic storage box with lid, covered in black plastic for darkness. didnt bother with roosting bars I'm afraid!

the home-made nesting box is now in service for Ruby (rabbit) and her babies...

I've also got a wire compost bin which I use on the flower beds when I want to get the girls to do some weeding!! folds flat when not in use, has a lid, so quite safe and very easy to move around.

I use a large cardboard box as a hospital wing in my house and a pet carrier as temp accommodation for newbies. It goes in the Omlet eglu run which I no longer need as I have a WIR. I put the run up against a wall to make it secure. I also have a medium dog crate for broodies.

I have spare roosting bars which come in useful for both!

My Eglu Go !gogreen! arrived today OH enquired about the two large boxes from Omlet and I told him it was a bargain. He raised an eye brow. I hope to rehome three ex-battery hens in the next few weeks something I have always wanted to do, now I have the !gogreen! the space and the time to look after them along with my other girls and the cats.
