Bramble
Feel a bit dim asking this , but are there any quiet chickens? I'm finding that ex-batts don't make too much noise, but my only non-exbatt, a pied suffolk, is a seriously gobby little madam - is that just 'cos she's a noisy chicken or are some breeds more noisy than others? Plum
The ones still in the egg My little buff orp bantam has a gentle chirp and doesn't do the egg chorus. Coral Nick squarks all morning until she lays an egg, right drama queen. Wyandotte bantams have their moments. My Pekin is quieter but doesn't make chicken noises more like a guinea pig or rusty door. Omlet Gingernut is just normal and love her soft clucking when I am down there sorting them out. I don't know if it works by breeds, I think it's more down to the bloodline
memphisto
Hello, This is my experience based on my girls, I don't know much about breed behaviours though i'm afraid Dilys- White Sussex- Very quiet but hasn't yet started laying Penny- Black Rock- Gooby when she's about to lay, quieter after she's laid, vocal for corn! Bubbles- Beechwood Blue- Chatterbox, shes to be coo-ing constantly, gets louder if she sees the cats! Not laying Willow- Warren- Noisey- just started laying, always gossiping! Maisy- Warren- A bit of both, chatters away to Willow (sisters), noisey if she sees cats, not laying. Lottie- White Star- Extremely quiet, not heard a peep from her in the 4 days we have had her. only 18 weeks old Ruby- Barred Rock- Quiet, but goes mental if you try to stroke her- only 18 weeks old
Sue
I have heard that Faverolles can be a nice quiet breed to keep, and apparently are very friendly.
Chicken Kitty
I hardly hear a peep from my Sussex bantams!
Redwing
I think you get noisy and quiet chickens in any breed, its down to the personality really In saying that I get few problems with my Wyandottes, if it wasnt for the cockerels no one would know that I have so many chickens in my garden
gongladosh
I hardly hear a peep from my Sussex bantams! Same here, perhaps the occasional quiet squeek rather than a cluck. Mine only makes a noise when laying...
mollyripkim
My bantam orpington hardly makes a noise, just a gentle cluck for treats. My silkies are generally quiet except for two in particular who have to do a big announcement when they have laid an egg!
sparkysmum
Here are the results for Sparkysmum's hens : Faverolle, lovely docile lady, generally quiet occasionally oooo oooo like an owl. Lav araucana, my bad tempered lady. Quiet but has a creaky gate squark. Dumpies. Lovely quiet ladies. Have never hard a noise from them other than a sort of coo as they follow you around. Pekin, noisy little thing. Sablepoot bantam , quietly coos. Lovely little hens. Light sussex. only 4mths old. Honks a bit like a goose. Brown leghorn. Also 4 mths old, yet to hear a sound. surfer_chicken
The ones still in the egg And even they start cheeping eventually All my ladies are noisy so I'm no help. My maran is the worst- 15 minute egg song every morning and she sounds like Marge Simpson
Mercedes55
Our ex batts are very quiet and we hadn't realised how loud other hens could be till we bought some pure breeds. Our Welsummer is nicknamed 'rent a gob' as she can be very loud. All our others are fairly okay, we used to have a Salmon Favorelles and she was very quiet and as has already been mentioned they are also very friendly girls too
AlisonH
My bluebelle makes a right racket, squawking at anything, and usually nothing, but my Amber Str is much quieter.
Chortle Chook
One of my silkies is as loud as loud could be. Always got a protest on (think she should visit St Paul's). The other two are very quiet. My Poland makes dear little noises My Frizzles are all quiet girls and one has never got beyond baby squeaks - guess she thinks she is still in the egg
SeramaSilly
My pekin is the worst - sounds like a strangled seagull and can hear her right down our busy road! Also had a leghorn for a short while (she prolapsed with her first egg and had to be put to sleep) and she seriously alarmed me with the racket she made - I really thought the neighbours would complain - it was unearthly! Bramble
Ooooh, thanks everyone ... I'm just toying with the idea (just thinking, not going to do it, of course ) of getting a couple of new hybrids when my girls go to their chirstmas holiday hen hotel ... they sell chucks where they are going (all hybrids) and that's where my pied suffolk came from. I was just wondering about the noise 'cos I don't think I could cope with another one that makes the din NOodle the pied suffolk makes ...
