The Brockham from Oakdene Coops

Recommended Posts

Interesting ... the one in the photo seems to be on a sort of brick structure, but I see it says that you can mount it on a fence or wall, or even on a tree. It would need to be a pretty sturdy fence I think, to hold something that size!

Afraid I am not convinced either that the ladder would be fox-proof (I note that they say 'predator resistant' in the blurb). It looks cute, but you'd need a run with it too.

Let us know if you do get one. I can see the idea of having it off the ground is attractive.

Thats an awful lot of money for what is essentially a cupboard! it has a couple of good design features such as the plastic nestbox floor and the door on the front

The wire floor would put me off though and the pop hole on the inside of the coop is a potential red mite haven

The small Dorking coop made by the same company is nice though

Actually I was thinking a wad of newspaper would 1) be free, 2) warm, 3) stop drafts from and 4) be super easy to clean every morning !!! Also means I can do a broody-box (minus the newspaper) if need be :D

Oh and it's pretty and won't use up space in the WIR. Sounds perfect to me!! :D

It is very attractive & they have made a good job of making it look current & on trend with the pretty bunting & pleasing pictures.

But I would not say it looked especially safe, strong or appropriate for keeping hens healthy & safe myself :?

I don't like that wire floor at all & the ladder could easily be climbed by predators.....that along with the red mite risk is enough to get a resounding no from me - sorry!

Mesh floors are an old practice - the droppings drop through and it is cleaner. BUT it's hard on the hens' feet and there's no replacement for a good clean on a regular basis.

I haven't seen any new coos with mesh floors before - the last ones I saw were very old coops at a breeder about 5 years ago.

i agree with the others a lot money for a painted fancy box looks more like a box for pigeons you see at the end of some buildings if you are going to put it inside your WIR just buy a classic and put it on a small table to raise it from the floor to give the hens more space not only that i can see a classic out lasting it and also keeping its price in value if you needed to sell it on at a later date

Ok... point taken

Well, I guess I did ask...

Nothing wrong with asking! but given that this is the Omlet forum, and a lot of us (although not all) have got Eglus, Cubes and Gos, you might expect that we are going to ask some probing questions about a new design like this. It's what suits your set-up, I like the idea of it being off the ground to take up less space, and some of the disadvantages that we've pointed out above might apply to any wooden housing. Horses for courses - if you want one, don't let us put you off!
