Earthquake?!

Recommended Posts

I thought I was going mad but it has just been mentioned on the Midlands News - a large boom was heard and felt around 6.10pm in the Midlands, Coventry down to north Oxfordshire and no-one is sure what it is yet.

I thought one of the low flying military planes had hit our roof, the dogs weren't happy and neither were the hens.

We went out to check the roof and then went down to see if there had been an accident on the main road.

A further report will be on the later news.

Mystery solved - MoD say it was from a Typhoon aircraft

http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-17697328

Yes, I've just seen that one Hazel :? most unlike any sonic boom I've heard before and we used to get lots in Norfolk when they practised out over the sea.

The MoD revealed it was from a Typhoon responding to an emergency call.
so are Typhoons the fourth emergency service?:lol:

I think I'll dig me tin hat out just in case... that's the loudest sonic boom I've ever heard.

Wow that explains a lot, I was driving just north of Coventry on the M6 at around that time and felt an impact on the side of my car, I thought I had blown a tyre (as there were no cars around me for me to have hit one) but the car drove fine after, it was a complete mystery at the time

Loud, wasn't it!!!!

I was at home and felt the whole house shake and the radiators sort of rattled. Horrible really, not knowing what it was, but it's amazing how far away it was heard, but how many people didn't hear it!? I rather suspect there's a bit more to it than we are being told ... :anxious:

Me too - having spent a lot of my childhood nestled amongst RAF bases I am well aware that they sometimes cock up  It was odd the way it came rolling across the fields, preceded by a rustling wind, then echoed back again a second later. Made my eardrums crackle :?

I understand from my fireman neighbour that the chopper had (allegedly) broadcasted on the frequency reserved for mayday signals in the event of a hijack or terrorist attack.... if that is indeed the case.

Personally I'm sat here in my tinfoil hat waiting the invasion of crab people

Speaking somewhat selfishly, I was just relieved that I didn't have a crashed jet aircraft sticking out of the roof or similar, I'm quite happy that the MoD have given an explanation and completely understand that it may or may not be the truth, whole truth and nothing but the truth as long as whatever crisis it was was averted, I guess that's all that matters?

As a private pilot, I have read about this incident on some flying forums.

Basically, planes & helicopters have devices called transponders - these transmit a signal that can be tracked by air traffic controllers.

In uncontrolled airspace, pilots set the 4 dials to read 7000.

If a controller wants to track a particular aircraft, they tell the pilot to set a particular number eg. 1234.

Certain numbers are reserved for certain 'emergencies'.

7600 is radio failure, 7700 is distress/emergency, 7500 Hijack.

When you change code, you set device on standby FIRST(so it doesn't transmit as you 'pass through' other codes)

So pilot may have

a. not put transponder on standby and transmitted the emergency code as he changed the numbers or

b. inadvertently actually set the code to an emergency number.

I suspect RAF may have used incident as a practice for the Olympics.
