We have used Atlas Direct a lot in the past, the price is good and you can do it all online very easily, we have had to call them to check things before and the customer service was good.

If you take out a yearly policy do ensure that they dont intend to take another payment to cover he next year when the first year is up as some companies try to roll it on for another year

A few tips

If you go away more than twice a year an annual policy is probably cheaper.

If you are going to the US for more than a couple of weeks and it is your only trip this year, bizarrely it is sometimes cheaper to take out an annual worldwide policy instead of a single trip one as an annual policy normally starts with a 31 day trip limit.

If you have personal possessions cover on your household policy which covers your stuff abroad you can delete this from the travel policy making it cheaper.

Whatever you take out it is really really important to read the medical conditions which you have to declare to them as anything on their list which you haven't declared will be excluded. If you have an annual policy you have to comply with the medical conditions when you book each trip, not just when you take it out. Some of the cheaper ones exclude a lot more than others.

Don't automatically go for travel insurance offered by the travel company - they are getting a huge commission.

Check with your bank as some accounts automatically have travel cover

Oh, and take out the policy as soon as your holiday is booked, not just before you go as you might need the cancellation cover

Hope this helps

Rosie and I only go away once a year when my folks treat us; I use the Post Office travel insurance for no other reason than it is cheap and seems to cover most stuff. Luckily I only had to claim from them once when I contracted pleurisy and had to pay for treatment abroad; they were prompt in reimbursing me and didn't quibble.

Another vote for Atlas, they were a lot cheaper than other companies and not as strict on health conditions, I liked the way you could pay a bit extra upfront to waive the excess fee should you need to claim :D I can't say anymore though as we never needed to claim.

We have been with America express for years on an annual policy and can't fault them. We did have to make a claim once and they were just as good as sorting it out and paid quickly. As we travel quite far afield we checked as well and it's definitely cheaper for us to have an annual policy.
