Pro - Does anyone else's nest boxes get soaked in rain?

After the sad loss of my bunny Shanty, I now have an empty eglu with a 3 metre run. So the question is what hens to fill it with.

A bit of fun for you all - if you had a spare classic what breeds would you have?

Araucana, Ancona and Cream Legbar... and when they're integrated into the big run, some Sussexes in whatever colours I can get

I must admit, I have really got to liking the pekin bantams with their posh slippers.

Some miniature silkies I think - although I would like some Barnevelders, Welsummers, Buff Sussex............the list is endless!

Millefleur Pekins or Owlbeard hens! They are on the I would love to own list.

 

I also wouldn't say no to a Silkie or Burmese bantam!

Pekins. A goldy millefleur one, a lavener one, a lemon millefleur one and ooo, I don't know they come in so many delightful colours.

 

Now if there was a spare Cube and WIR, I'd have a Barnvelder, a Buff Sussex, a light Sussex, a Croad Langshan (spelling?) a Scot's Dumpy and a Faverolle and, and, and

If I could also getaway from our nasty Scottish weather I would fill it with silkies but thats not going to happen so I'd have some more ex batts , except that you can't get them in Scotland now so I'd have............. pekins if I couldn't f/r them or some perfectly ordinary every day friendly hybrids and hope they live for years.

I'd get copper blue marans, blue laced wyandottes, modern game (any colour) black araucanas, chocolate orpingtons and appenzellers.

 

 

Of course in my amended scenario I would have a spare eglu cube....

Forgot thuringians and I can't make up my mind whether I love or hate Yamato gunkei chickens. Really wishing I had a spare Eglu now!

Ex-batts! It was always my intention to get ex-batts but I wanted to learn my chicken keeping skills with hybrids and then when "morehens" struck I fell for the bantams! Next time it has to be the ex-batts

I waited until I knew a bit about chicken keeping from the hybrids before I got some ex batts and then I hatched some bantams.

 

I felt ex batts would have been too much of a challenge for a new chicken keeper but I know some who had ex batts first.

Thuringians used to be top of my wish list but I've only ever seen one so I kinda decided that they were beyond my reach. Actually I've learnt a lot about how difficult it is to get the chickens one sees in books. Lots of Pekins, but few millefleur or lavender ones; lots of Polands but mostly black with white heads rather then laced ones; lots of Silkies providing you don't mind if they don't have much of a pom pom and only want black or white ones; and lots of other exciting large breeds providing you want 2 identical girles and a boy Mind you I guess that has helped me keep numbers down. Now that I've found a really good supplier of pretty chickens . . . numbers may go up again
