xScrunchee
I'm afraid that I have had to leave the facebook thingy due to an old friend contacting me who I would rather have not heard from. Not to worry-I didn't really know what the heck to do on their anyway.
Richard
I'm afraid that I have had to leave the facebook thingy due to an old friend contacting me who I would rather have not heard from. Thats a shame. I played about with the privacy settings; you can set it so that only people you accept as friends can find you in a search and you can edit what people can see about you. Would that help?
Louise
I can't join as it doesn't support my email addy as it is a work one it seems to only support accounts I am unable to access from work
Guest
I am not very impressed with its 'user-friendliness'. I have altered the privacy settings but can't see how I can have them set differently for different people. And I don't get any alerting emails and can't see how to set that up either. I have been 'poked' but I can't find out what that actually means or does. I had the choice to delete the poke or to poke back. Just to be on the safe side, I deleted it. The poke was from my DD1 I could ask her I suppose

xScrunchee
Well I have re-joined the facebook. Seems stupid to leave really because one person sent a message which I can just ignore. I will have a look on the settings bit and see if I can change who can 'find' me in a search.

Guest
What do you make of this? http://s204818343.websitehome.co.uk/facebookwarning.html Is is just scare-mongering or is it saying that the US government is using facebook to gather information? Egluntyne
Scary. I've read that UK bosses look at facebook: 1. To see if what you say differs from the CV you have submitted. 2. To see what you have to say about your place of work, colleagues etc. Too "Big Brother" for me. I'm giving it a wide berth.
starboyhull
Its very possible that they will sell your information (if it says they can in their terms and conditions) and as an employer I would probably have a quick look online to see what I could find..... If any of you use your real name on websites do a search on yahoo or google for your name its amasing what can come up.....
Richard
I have been 'poked' but I can't find out what that actually means or does. I had the choice to delete the poke or to poke back. Just to be on the safe side, I deleted it. The poke was from my DD1 I could ask her I suppose My understanding is that if you are 'poked' the person who has poked you is asking if you want to make contact. You then have a set time (I think its a few days) during which you will have access to that person's details. You can then decide if they are really who they say they are, and if you want to contact them. invite them to be a friend etc. So what you should do (as I understand it) is check out the person who has poked you. If it really is DD1 (and one has to assume that the details she has given are such that you would recognise her!) you could poke them back, or invite them to be a friend. Mind you, that's just what I think happens - you might be safer checking it out with DD1! The youngsters will understand it much better than an elderly fogey like me! The easy thing to say is that anyone using it has to be very careful about what they write. However, these things are seductive and it is really easy to say much more about yourself than you really want to ... Mind you, doesn't that happen on the Omlet forum - its like chatting to a group of intimate friends and very easy to forget that these things can be read by anyone at all! redfrock
I have been very careful about what I have put.... My year of birth doesn't show, my email address doesn't show - apart from one I had to put on the group and I deliberately set up a roaming one for that, it doesn't say where I went to school or where I work or have worked previously. I don't want any of my residents getting in touch or learning anything about me. If you search for somebody - all you can see is a photo and a name. Unless they agree to you being their friend you cannot see any more than that. They may recognize you and send you an invite to be your friend but you can ignore them. I think you can 'poke' anybody but again it is just something that you can ignore. I get the impression that it is a bit like a tap on the shoulder. I am not sure how prospective employers could find out info about you unless you had agreed to being their friend - and then they could only see parts of your profile that you gave access to. kannie
Ok - so I'm finally thinking that now's the time to get on and register! So I expect this is the first of many questions... Do you have to give your full real name, or do you use a username like on this forum? And a second already - it asks for your email password - is this a new password just for this site? Mrs Frugal
I used my real name, Christine but I made up a new password for the Facebook site. I didn't want to give out my real e-mail password and it accepted that.

kannie
I've done it! I used my uni email, so its automatically added me to that group - and I can see lots of my old classmates there! Weird! What do I do now? I don't seem to be able to see anything about them - do I have to make them my friends first? And if I do does that mean they'll get sent something about me? I've joined omletteers too of course!
