I don't understand what happened

Recommended Posts

I have just found marigold dead in the WIR under the drinker  . She is one of my ex batts that I rescued last year. I let them all out at 7.00am this morning and she was fine, she went straight to the food bowl then I went back down at about 10am to clean them out and let them out for a wander and there she was dead under the drinker. I thought she looked a little off colour yesterday but she was still eating and drinking and dived on the meal worms. I feel bad now that I didnt notice how poorly she must have been. What could have happened to her??? My other two girlies that are in with her are really freaked out and won't go over that side of the WIR where I found her little body and they are making unhappy chicken noises. I am sorry to waffle on as I know people lose chickens on here everyday but my Husband is away with work and my Mum and Dad are on Holiday and my friends would think I had gone bonkers being upset over a chicken. Thanks for listening x

Sorry to hear about Marigold - it was obviously very sudden, perhaps her heart, and you shouldn't blame yourself in any way. In my experience, hens can often look a bit under the weather one day and fine the next, and I doubt that you would have been able to prevent her death even if you had acted differently tbh.

Your other girls will settle down and adapt to the new situation fairly quickly, so try not to worry about them. Easier said than done, I know!

Sometimes with ex-batts their little bodies are all worn out. She was one of the lucky ones who got to feel the sun on her back and be free.

I know losing them is hard but also feel proud of yourself for giving her a quality of life so few of them have.

Sending hugs

RIP little Marigold

Sending you hugs!

She had a good bit of time out of the cage so you have done well - two of mine didn't last that long but they still got to see the sun and peck grass and know the pleasure of a dust bath! :D

It's better if its quick too. I had one that lasted a week in the house being given baytril so I got close to her but she didn't make it. :(

You are doing an amazing job just giving these girls a home!

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Don't feel bad, chooks are very good at hiding symptoms of illness. It is a shock to find one dead in the run, one of the chicks I hatched at Easter died in the summer, she had been fine no obvious signs of illness, I let them all out in the morning went to work and when I came back and checked on them there she was just lying in the corner of the run.

Sadly it is one part of chicken keeping.

You gave Marigold a second chance of a proper chickem's life and loved and cared for her, you can't do any more than that.

Thank you all so much for your virtual hugs and lovely words, only fellow chicken keepers understand the highs and lows of looking after chooks. Everytime I lose one, I tell myself that I won't get upset again, but I always do  I wouldnt be without them though and will continue to rehome the ex batties as long as I can, as I know loads of others do on this forum too. Thanks again you lovely people :D

I'm so sorry to hear this. We lost our first chicken, Isabella, last month and it was a sudden death too. My daughter and I had a good cry and created a collage of photos of her for my daughter's pegboard and it made us feel better, though we still miss her.

I've painted pebbles with each of the pets names on, which are in the garden. It means that even as we lose our loved feathered and furry friends, we will always have a stone to remember them by.

Sending you some more hugs.
