Bleaching/Dyeing hair...

Recommended Posts

It's my friend + Flatmates birthday on Tuesday and we're having a Robot themed party - we said in September we'd all dye our hair for it.

One girl has gone BRIGHT ORANGE today and they want to dye mine blue on Tuesday.

My hairs black so will need bleaching first and then dyeing to turn it blue.

Any advice or tips on what not to do? The girls dye their hair all the time so should know what they're doing

It's just for a laugh, I'm a student and will never do it again once I've graduated and get a proper job! The agrics all dye bleach theirs for the Rugby so town if full of bleached heads

If it's really bad I can dye it back to black and cut it off!

As the mum of 2 girls, I have been through this loads of times.

It does damage the hair to some degree & getting it from black to white will be near impossible without going to a salon.

One daughter went from darkest brown to white (& then to pink) via bright orange before our brilliant hairdresser sorted it out.

However, bleaching your hair out Is a rite of passage, & we all do it.

How about doing a streak in the front of your hair instead, then dying that blue?

It will dye black again with no problems, but may be brittler & rougher than before, however LOTS of very deep conditioning can help & something like Moroccan Oil or Elvive Extraordinary Oil will work wonders.

The very best place to buy crazy dyes & the bleached, plus to get lots of advice is on a site called BEE UNIQUE :P

Good luck with whatever you decide...photos are obligatory.

Later this year in November I plan to do something silly with my hair. One person on this forum will probably guess why

I henna my hair every six weeks or so and want to spray colour, maybe purple or something glittery, I don't really know what to do yet but I was wondering if it would react oddly with the henna. I was going to ask on here for advice so if you don't mind I'll sneak the question in your thread Lewis.

It has always been my opinion that bleaching hair is a bad idea and depending on your type of hair worse for some than others. I remember a friend of mine whose hair went really bad and it took a couple of years to grow out and improve. Blokes go bald quicker than most women. Hows your Dads head of hair? Might be worth thinking about.

How exciting! I was never brave enough to go an unnatural colour, always went henna red or coppers. How about more of an electric blue like this that way you don't need to bleach and then dye your hair. But then again, if you are happy to chop it all off if it doesn't work, then go for it! As you say, you have plenty of time for sensible hair when you leave uni. Look forward to see the pics :D

I was also going to suggest the vibrant blue black mentioned above, but that's because I'd love to have it.

I think the blue black is nicer, but if you want blue blue then you wouldn't have to bleach to be white, if you lift your colour just enough for the blue to work you shouldn't do too much damage but an expert would get a better finish.

As mentioned photos are a must.

Enjoy as soon you will be stuck with responsibility and not able to do it. I have very thick long hair, a very responsible job and am over 40. Id love to shave one side of my hair DH says I'm too old and boss says no! Stuck I am

My brother had mousy brown hair and used to bleach it platinum blonde whilst a student, and then at various stages had it red and then blue. He had it cut short to his skull all over and as he is very tall, he looked very striking :D (Actually at one point we told him he looked like a walking match - pale and thin body with a red head  ) I think my mother persuaded him to get rid of the blue colour for his wedding day, but I can't actually remember

He is well over 40 now, still very tall, not very grown up, with the mouse being gradually replaced by white. Depending on what you've been blessed with (long, thick, strong but quite co"Ooops, word censored!" Celtic hair in our family) its quite hard to keep your hair in A1 condition anyway, so I'd just follow some of the good advice you've been given and go with whatever you fancy. It is true. You do only live once 8)

How about going for an ombré effect with the blue black at the top and a bright blue on the ends?

It depends how long your hair is really.

That's a really good idea if your hair is long enough, that way you could then chop the stripped, damaged lengths off.

From experience I would steer clear of bleaching then another colour, then trying to go back. The blue black colour looks great, you could then get some bright blue clip in extensions.

But then again we've all done daft things with our hair, I suppose it's a right of passage so whilst it doesn't really matter go for it :D

A few years ago, I highlighted my own hair, one sunny afternoon, at a friends house. It went white, and Very stretchy. How it didn't all fall off/out, we'll never know. Luckily, a friend, who is a hairdresser, once she'd stopped laughing, and extracting michael, did magic things, and got it back to it's normal colour, more or less...

Lewis - go for it! But I would advise you to pop into Kim Rees in Market Street, opposite Aberdashery - just for them to advise. They are lovely and will be able to tell you what might go wrong! I shouldn't think they would mind - you could always promise to book a haircut there, in return for their kind advice.

Would the stargazer colours not take on your hair? I once used a bright pink for some colour slashes - mind you, I was blonde then. They turned a rather flourescent pink, but hey I liked it! Was erm very different. Ha ha!

Good luck!
