As some of you may remember, we took Didge to the vets a few weeks ago (on a monday).(http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=96088)

The injections and antibiotics seemed to have been working as she seem to perk up a LITTLE but by the Friday of the same week she looked very poorly and so we took her back to the vet. She got noticeably more limp and 'lifeless' on the 15 minute journey.

Her temperature had come down but her weight had dropped from 1.9 kg to 1.7 in 4 days.

The vet gave us 3 choices

1. She could give her some more injections (we weren't convinced this would do any good)

2. She could find out how soon we could be seen by a 'local' bird specialist - 1 hours (?) drive away (we thought this would be too stressful for her)

3. we could let her go (ie. PTS)

It was a hard decision but we thought that option 3 was the kindest option for Didge. So she is now buried in one of my old T-shirts at the bottom of our garden. I know that we gave her the best life we could and that she had 8 months of freedom but writing this (several weeks later!!) is still making me cry.

Didge was the least feathered and most scared of the ex-bats but we nursed her form this

She was a great little girl - I'll miss calling Didge, Didge, didgeridoooooooooooooooooooo

RIP Didge.

Ah so sorry to hear about little Didge :( Been wondering how she was doing since your post a few weeks ago and hoping no news was good news.

I still cry when I think of the girls I've lost, I don't think it ever gets any easier saying goodbye, but she did at least know some lovely days of fine feathered freedom with you, so you were lucky to find each other.

Thinking of you and sending hugs x

Thanks everyone - it helps to share on here - people without chickens just don't understand.

Thanks for sharing this. I was beginning to think that I'm just too soft to keep hens as I get too upset when they go.
