Claireabella
Has anyone ever suffered with cramp in their hands? I seem to be getting this quite a lot lately - daily in fact. Anything can bring it on from carving meat, to hoovering to just holding a cup of tea
Grandmashazzie
Could it be carpal tunnel syndrome or a repetitive strain injury?
Cinnamon
How odd, I was wondering the same thing, except I keep getting pins & needles Just in my hands, & never at work where I use my hands constantly, but at home & in bed.
Egluntyne
I have a problem with my ulnar nerve and get pins and needles and crampy feelings if I do anything involving having my elbow bent for any length of time. An operation was mentioned, but I'm not risking it as I'm left handed and it is my left arm that's is affected. Maybe your ulnar nerve is playing up? patsylabrador
I get cramp all over from my feet to my hands unless I do a regular, good amount of steps every day. I have no idea why it happens or why the exercise reduces it. I've put it down to peri-menopause stuff and hormones.
The Dogmother
Magnesium really helps with muscle cramps and is worth a try if it bothers you.
Claireabella
Thanks everyone. I was just curious of whether this is something quite common. I get it quite badly in my feet and calves at night and first thing in the morning but it's started in my hands within the last few months throughout the day. It's the same as in my feet and legs really, muscles spasms, sort of when your toes go stiff but it's my fingers I tend to drop things as soon as they cramp which is worrying when moving boiling saucepans off the hob etc. It could be related to repetitive actions, it's always when I'm gripping something. That's interesting about the ulnar nerve Egluntyne but I don't tend to experience any pins and needles . Perhaps I just need to do a bit more 'proper' exercise to get the blood pumping and get more oxygen to the muscles and give the magnesium a try. Perhaps age is just catching up with me
chickencam
Pins and needles in your hands can be a sign of an under active thyroid mine has been much better since being on medication to correct this.
Charlottechicken
I started having leg cramps at night due to women's problems(!). As I was eating fairly healthily and never adding salt to my food I did wonder if a bit of salt would help so began putting a twist of sea salt in my Ovaltine before bed. I never noticed the taste, it was only a small amount, and it did stop the cramps. A hysterectomy sorted it out completely though
Valkyrie
Hmmm pins and needles sounds interesting - I get the odd fingers that seem to lose colour and then tingle. Never the same ones. I gathered that was also a sign of anaemia? Particularly if I touch a cold steering wheel then I can have either a couple of fingers or maybe a thumb that does it. Weird eh. I wondered if cramp was something to do with not enough fluid intake? Only had it big time in my legs - but also my double jointed toes when I swim (that drives me potty because it's just one toe on each foot that does it )
chickencam
That sounds like Raynauld's syndrome, several people in my family have this, it is a common condition that is caused by sudden changes in temperature which causes the blood vessels to go into spasm. My Grandad, Dad and ED all have it. ED struggles with swimming in the sea and is afraid to go skiing because a combination of the cold and tight ski boots triggers it. She also struggles in heels on cold nights out.
Valkyrie
Well I have decided it isn't a silly question because I think I know what my problem is (although nothing to do with cramp) - Chickencam thank you. I have been looking at the Raynaud's images and yes my finger(s) do look exactly like. And then I read a doom and gloom page - EEEEEEEEEEK! and quickly jumped off and onto another. Very informative (yes stress is one of my middle names). Something to mention to the doc - I wonder if the blood pressure tablets triggered it as I've never had it before then. Angie
I get foot cramps. calf , thigh and some finger ( usually little finger) cramps, but I have Inflammatory problems and it goes hand in hand. Talk to your GP.
chickencam
Glad to help, sorry if I worried you, some blood pressure meds do cause cramps particularly in the legs. My mother in law had to be taken off statins too because she got dreadful leg pains.
Valkyrie
There seems to be lots of side effects to the BP tablets. I think the doom and gloom site was written by my mum. The other site was much better with balanced information - saying the most extreme cases may be doom and gloom but then it can go away never to return as well. Just been reading up on cramps. Well again that's an all sort thing. I do get restless legs occasionally which apparently cramps are linked to (but like I said I only get them once in a blue moon), as does my brother and so did my dad. Drinking tonic water sorts that out - but I prefer to have bitter lemon - it's the quinine that seems to work the magic there. I only need a glass or two - usually finish the bottle over 2 or 3 days and then the fidgeting stops for a while again. http://www.patient.co.uk/health/cramps-in-the-leg
gavclojak
I had a bout of pins and needles and leg/muscle spasms, I made the mistake of googling it....never again, I spent the next few weeks in absolute panic thinking I was going to be struck down by all sorts! I will never google symptoms again, if I'm that worried I wait a week, if the symptoms are still there then I go to the GP for a proper diagnosis!
