rsalvatore86
It's our first Christmas with our girls. We have an eglu classic and two ladies. We are going away for Christmas from Christmas Eve evening, until the 27th. Normally if we go away out neighbours sort the girls for us, but they are also going to be away. What does everyone else do with their chickens when they're away? Pet sitter? Closed run, open eglu? Any thoughts? Thanks!
Beantree
Got to be a pet sitter Rsalvatore86. They only have to spill the water and you will come back to no chickens. You also need to remove any eggs or they may get broken and they eat them, which is a habit very difficult to stop.
Egluntyne
You will be lucky to get a pet sitter at such short notice. Is there a local teenager you can bribe?
gavclojak
Good luck with that, even my long term dog walker wouldn't do Christmas Eve, day and Boxing Day:( maybe it's just this area!
Olly
Closed run and open Eglu is essential, but three days is a bit long without a visit. As Egluntyne says, you'll be lucky to iund a pet-sitter at short notice. You can stock up on food and water but they really need visiting at least once during that period. Might be time to get to know some other neighbours!
Alis girls
What area are you in?
mullethunter
Although I would worry about them, as long as I could guarantee they couldn't run out of / spill their water, I would leave them in the run with the Eglu door open on their own for that time. PickleHen
Happy to help out if you are in London. I am in NE London!
Mars
Leave plenty of water in a bowl and put big stone in it so the hens couldn't spill the water, leave some long lasting food like carrots, cabbage or lettuce in case something unexpected happens to their food "rats and mice don't eat those" , and they will be fine. The only real thing I would worry about is if their water freezes. you can put an aquarium heater but that needs electricity.
