What do you put in your nesting box?

Recommended Posts

I used straw with my previous girls, but found it got stuck to their toes and went everywhere. I'm thinking of trying wood shavings, but how do i plug the hole in the nesting box? I was think that maybe i could put some hanging basket liner in the bottom, shavings on top, and then some straw so they can furnish the nest the way they like it...

I use horse bedding, Easibed, in my run and in the nest box. It's great stuff! A little does fall through the hole in the nestbox but not much. There have been gadgets invented on here using a cut up milk carton and a bolt to plug the gap. I did try a bit of lino once but it was difficult to get it to sit properly and the chickens always move things about anyway  .

I line the poo tray with newspaper and I fill the nestbox with woodchips. No problem with any critters hanging around in the bedding and I tip it in the council compost bin.

I used to fill the poo tray and nestbox with woodshavings, but had problems with mold. Newspaper and woodchippings don't have that problem.

Line the box with newspaper and use cross cut shredded paper and card. easy to compost.

Ditto, except I use long shreds, as we have a very windy garden and the cross-cut blow everywhere. Anyone that wants to try piecing it together after the hens have had it is very welcome!

The long shreds get caught in their legs and I have them all over the garden! I scoop upthe newspaper and shreddings from the egg pop hole and it is easy to get them out and they dont blow everywhere.
