Richard
My old hens - pepperpot and gingernut ranger - never climbed trees. My new girls, at about 12 weeks old, are climbing trees like .., chickens that really like climbing trees (couldn't think of an appropriate simile). Do other folk have girls that spend their time in the branches?

AJuff
I have a tree rooster too. Daisy, white hybrid, loves settling herself into trees quite high up. Sometimes I think she's escaped but i find her up a tree. She won't go near the holly tree though!
chrisnrob
The only time ours climbed a tree was when Chris closed the Eglu door whilst he was cleaning it and then forgot to open it again. When he went down the garden much later on to shut the girls up for the night there was no sign of them - but he could hear them. After some searching he found them, at head height, in the apple tree! They were making grumbling noises and didn't look too pleased with their new overnight accommodation Rob
Egluntyne
Doing what comes naturally I suppose. They roost in trees in the wild. Nice pics.
Richard
hi how great they seem very at home up there sarah Yes - they seem to have no trouble getting up, but it is quite a performance when they decide to come down! Lots of wobbling about and false starts etc.

Richard
awwww they look lovely! how is georgina after the dog attack? Stroppy as ever and strutting around with only a couple of tail feathers and a bald patch on her side! She is actually absolutely fine and laid an egg yesterday - I thought the fright might put her off! She's 3 and a half now and still lays 4 or 5 eggs a week. Couperwife
Squeak doesnt climb trees, she climbs the garden bench one of the white ones sometimes joins her up there, it seems to be a different one each time the bench it at the bottom of the garden and quite close to our neighbours shed and im sure that she is trying to work out how to get onto the shed (6 ft of chicken wire is her only problem at the moment ) I love to see them climbing (as long as you know that they cant escape or get in any danger) great pictures by the way,
Richard
awwwww bless her fluffy bum. Did you have any more probs with the IL's? Yep, quite a few but they are packing up to go now. It sounds from my posts as though I don't like people - I do, honestly I really do! Its just that this pair drive me demented, well more demented than normal. BIL's dad says 'as god makes 'em so he pairs em'! Even he has trouble getting on with his son! Oh well, back to normal later today. Then I get to see my son and his girlfriend tomorrow and life will be back to it's normal, mundane equitable state. the forum has been great over the weekend - my therapy! Thanks to you all. chrisnrob
Chris and Rob - how on earth did your chooks get that high ...can they jump that high The apple tree was quite small and had some low branches so I think they jumped from one to the other. You can see the apple tree in this pic http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=13522 Rob
Poplars
we have two new chickens and we have the same problem, the old ones never climbed a tree, but the new ones go up into it to roost if we don't show them into the eglu at night, then in the day they will sometimes go up there if the old one is being viscious. I suppose that is what they would do in the wild to get out of they way of predators, O well it is very funny anyway!
chocchick
That's so sweet. We don't have low enough trees.
Poplars
you don't need low trees! one of mine was found 4 metres up last night!!!! Pictures to follow when we can get them on the comp. Tried to put them to bed and one was missing, we had to get a ladder to get her. She is a bluebelle but we think that maybe she is really a pigeon! Richard
one of mine was found 4 metres up last night!!!! g, we had to get a ladder to get her. She is a bluebelle but we think that maybe she is really a pigeon! Wow - did she climb up branch by branch do you reckon or fly a chunk of the way? Mine would never get down if they got that high - they seem to manage going up but have a dreadful job climbing downwards
cutechicky
In my garden I have a huge rosemary bush. They seem to love nothing more than to sit on a big fat branch. They also love to sit on the garden bench and look through our kitchen window at whats going on in the house. The other day I came home to find they had flown through the window and were sleeping in the dog bed! I must admit the dog wasn't happy! Snowy
Poor dog! Since mine have been in their new run (see gallery pics), the five oldest sleep in one eglu and the two youngest roost in the branches It is funny to see them clambering about in the branches during the day though, they obviously enjoy themselves. Great pics Richard - that is the perfect tree for them isn't it?
Poplars
I think that she jumped on the eglu run then onto a big arch in the tree and then from branch to branch. Ours really don''t like getting down either, they either flap and crash down or we take mercy and get the ladder out! When pearl was at the top she was asleep and we were really worried that she would freak out when we tried to lift her, but it is all ok now!
