clucker1
Ie not for a musical or for a fish . My Salter scales have just nearly broken, well the "on/zero " button has cracked so only a matter of time before it breaks. I think this set have lasted about 2 years as did the previous set. I use them a lot, everyday for everything, from baking, bread making, weighing the dogs dinner etc so loads of use. Is it unreasonable to expect them to last more than 2-3 years....ok they weren't expensive £20-£30 ish. Any other scales recommendations please? The LCD type are easy to use and I like being able to pop a bowl on top and add ingredients whilst weighing at the same time.
mullethunter
Ive often wished for a set of the flat ones you can place a bowl on, but because of the issues you've mentioned I've only ever had the old fashioned balance type scales (also Salter). I've had them since I left home 17 years ago - they can't really break.
Blackrocksrock
I must be on my 3rd set of Salter flat digital scales. I dont know why they dont last too long but I like them as they weigh my eggs every day as well as for baking etc. I usually manage to buy them in Tesco quite reasonably. Olly
I have these Joseph Joseph scales, they weren't cheap but they are brilliant. They slip into a drawer, you can 'zero' them to use any container, and you can switch from ounces to grammes to fluid oz/ml. I had gone through several cheap digital scales before I got these. Highly recommended.
Blackrocksrock
They look good for when mine give up the ghost. Nice to have a recommendation.
mullethunter
Oh no, now I NEED some of them!
kinsk
I have the Joseph Joseph ones and was about to say which ever ones you buy don't buy them! They are the worst scales I have ever used. I love their products but with these I definitely think it's style over substance!

Olly
That's really funny, because as noted above, I think they are brilliant! I think the moral of that story is 'go to a department store and try them out' because we all have different requirements.
Luvachicken
I've had numerous scales that zero themselves, weigh the bowl etc, but I would still go for good old fashioned scales with the actual weights. These are what I have now and apart from a bit of dusting from icing sugar or flour they really do an an accurate job and I would never have battery scales again. Valkyrie
I have Salter - but the old fashioned imperial scales. I love them to bits. I never really weigh the exact amount - always a little over if anything. Hubby doesn't like imperial and will insist on grams so he has a little digital one. I think they are also Salter - that is not allowed in my kitchen! My grandmother never weighed anything - she just scooped spoonfuls of this, that and the other and was the best cook ever! Apart from flaky pastry - she had hot hands! But her other pastries were so yum. My mum's cooking is not exactly good. OK-ish. But she's improved in her later years! mullethunter
I am, by nature, quite anti metric because my grandma taught me in ounces. However I now have a set of both imperial and metric weights so that I don't always have to convert in my head!
chickencam
I have a set of digital scales which I bought from Lidl about 9 years ago for £7.99 they are brilliant. They get used daily for lots of different things including weighing eBay parcels for postage. I had a flat Salter set which only lasted a couple of years. I have mixed feelings about expensive kitchen gadgets, I bought a Dualit hand mixer after having a cheap one for about 20 years, it conked out after about 9 months and I had a massive fight with Dualit for a replacement, they eventually gave me an ex demo one which started to sound ropey pretty quickly but is still going. I think that things like icing sugar get into the plastic cogs and strip them. I have a cheap Morrisons one that cost me £6 which has lasted much better despite the fact that is largely gets used for icing sugar. The only thing it doesn't really do is vary in speed even though it has separate settings.

Purplemaniacs
However I now have a set of both imperial and metric weights so that I don't always have to convert in my head! I have both sets too Got them from Robert Dyas. I have both sets too. I always cook in ounces but I got the metric set for cooking with DD and DS but now they are grown up and it is the grandchildren who use the metric weights.
