chelsea
Our lovely chook Sam died right in front of me this evening She had a respitory infection about 2 weeks ago that she recovered well from, today she had started to wheeze and sneeze again so hubby took her to the vet at teatime, she had an injection and went on a nebulizer (which she had before and was fine). When hubby took her out of her carrier she looked like she was asleep, she then made a very sudden spasm like move almost jumping in the air and then she was gone.............. We have buried her in the garden under the palm tree which she was sitting under this morning, she is in a box lined with the stuffing I had from an old pillow - so on her own little fluffy cloud and she had a pink carnation and her favourite raisins placed in with her. I cant believe she has gone, her and Ella have been free ranging since 8 this morning and have been dustbathing, eating yoghurt and scurrying around on the lawn all day. Ella is really upset - she went straight in the eglu tonight when we shut her in the run, I hope she will be ok. People who dont have chickens dont understand,....she wasnt just a chicken she was a MUCH loved pet/part of the family. I know Sam was loved, we love our girls and that's why this forum is so lovely I can think of 2 things to say, she was loved and that's special and also she went in a way that left you in shock but she didn't suffer. Mel (& Paul)
Dear Chelsea What a horrid thing you had to witness - but it seems that you gave her all the love and attention that a chicken could want. I am sure she is now pecking away happily in her own chicken heaven (rolling green fields, sweetcorn on tap and foxes behind bars) along with all of us who have lost much loved chicken pets. Just remember, those of us here DO understand, we have all been through what you have one way or another - so you can take comfort in knowing you are amoung friends. Lots of cyber hugs xxx

Dancing Gal
Very sorry to read about your loss - even though I've yet to get my chickens I realise that my girls when I get them will be my pets as much as my moggies are my pets. I completely understand how sad you must be feeling. Take heart in the fact that you gave her a beautiful life.

Didnt sleep well, worrying about Ella - she is currently sat in the kitchen (which is normally off limits) and watching gmtv. Me and my sister were laughing about Sam's antics last night - she was looking after the chickens the weekend and she slipped up on chicken poo! going to get some more friends for Ella today as i dont want her to get lonely......shall i get 2 more or 3 more??? i have a mark 2 eglu with converter and they free range a lot....do you think i'd get 4 hens in the eglu?
