Never rains but it pours... :-(

Recommended Posts

My 2 cats Bess and Alfie are currently at the vets at the moment :-( They have both been kept in on totally unrelated problems for operations today after being pretty fit and healthy for ages they now both have to have an operation on the same day - what are the chances of that?

Here they are having a cuddle....

I took Bess (grey one) to the vets yesterday as she had an old wound reopen which they decided to stitch today however Alfie (ginger one) has come down with cystitis again (he's had it twice before) and i phoned up to ask if i could bring him in to be checked when i took Bess in this morning and they said no because he didn't have an appointment but to come and get some stuff which would take a urine sample so i picked that up when i got Bess but had little luck getting a sample so i phoned them up again and they said 'ok then bring him in and we'll get the sample' so i went back to the vets with him and now they have just phoned to say he has a blockage and will need an operation and catheter and that he is quite seriously ill and will be in for several days and it will be a long term problem :cry: Am worrying myself sick here about both of them. I just want them home and well.... :(

Oh Helen im so sorry. There is nothing worse than having pets at the vets is there? :( I wont even go to the vets with our animals (hubby has to do it) and I always say to him "make sure they come home with you". As I do nothing but worry, and pace up and down.

I hope Bess and Alfie are ok  and home with you soon safe and sound.

I have worked out than when life is chugging along all too good that something horrid is just around the corner to make life pants again......all sent to try us me thinks

positive vibes coming your way and let us know eh?

Thankyou ALL so much for your kind wishes. Reading your replies made me feel a lot better :) (Yes they are brother and sister lost sheep!)

So i phoned the vet and is mostly good news.

Bess is fine - just about come round from her op and can come home - will just be on antibiotics for a while (she hates taking tablets! :? )

Alfie has also just had his op. Things weren't as bad as initially feared. He didn't have a blockage but they have catheterised him and cleared his system out :vom: But thankfully he can come home today! I hated the idea of him staying over night...I have to keep a very close eye on him in future - at the moment he is on a mix of wet and dry food that needs to change to all wet food to up his water intake. Shes given me some more tips on upping his water intake as well but what has got me thinking is that she said this may well be a stress related thing.

Bess goes outside a lot - Alfie barely ever - though he used to. He had an injured tail a while ago and we think he may have gone out and got beaten up by a neighbourhood cat - hence why he is stressed now (and possibly what is causing cystitis problems) I also feel bad cos he doesnt dare go out in the back garden cos he's petrified of the chickens. :( Any ideas on solving this? I hate the idea of him living in fear that way and it making him ill :(

Get him some Feliway spray, if you google feliway it will come up. My mum found this stopped her stressed cats peeing everywhere and fighting like a dream. it comes as an air infuser (plug in to a socket) or as a spray, and we initially used both, but now just spray the cats morning and evening (which is a bit cheaper). It's quite bargainous on eBay. I wouldn't beat yourself up too much, neutered boys do generally get water infections as they're rubbish at drinking enough water. If you try the things the vet suggests you might be surprised at how much of a difference you see in him once he's not dehydrated. My friend's cat Harry became a different boy once she got him drinking water. You might also try catnip tea, which my cats LURVE. It makes them very happy little creatures.

Thanks Aunty e. The vet murmerred something about feliway too - i'll look into it.

Both home now and feeling understandably, a bit sorry for themselves - the nightmare now is that they used to eat the same food from the same bowls whenever they wanted it - now they have to eat different foods and i will have to feed them seperatly so it should be interesting!

Is LOVELY to have them home now, though i swear Bess, in particular keeps glaring at me! Milo gave them a good sniff!

Just to say - I took both cats back to the vets today and all is ok. Bess' wound is healing fine, Alfie will have this issue for the rest of his life and we will have to keep a close eye on him as if unnoticed it could be fatal but he is sitting purring on my lap now (might never let him go :) ) and i hope he will be ok to. Got him a water fountain and some feliway. Thanks for all your support guys :D
