xScrunchee
Hi all, I have looked at the 'run inspiration' thread and the home made runs look lovely What I would like to know is-What size are you runs? And how many hens do you keep in them?

xScrunchee
So in feet that would be roughly 6 1/2 feet X 13 feet?

Same here but I have 3. They also get to free range most afternoons and all weekend as long as someone's home. I have a fairly small garden too so this is probably as big as it's going to get. Helen&Lee
Ours is about 15ft x 8ft and about 7ft high. I'm off to put pics on that thread now... Helen
xScrunchee
Laura-on the run inspiration thread you said that you had the smallest walk in chicken run in the world, we'll I've beat you. Mine is only going to be 5ft x 11ft which is even smaller!! I didn't actually consider it to be very small as I figured that it's bigger than the omlet one but now after looking at other peoples and reading that you have 'the smallest walk in run' I am now worried that mine is going to be way too small. I have three girls but thought that I could get away with 4 if I lost one of mine and replaced it with 2 to make introductions easier. Too late now-it's coming on Saturday, besides I wouldn't have been able to have a bigger one anyway! Snowy
Don't worry Jay - it will be absolutely fine for 4! Plus don't forget it will give you more room to add different levels and branches, shrubbery and things to give them some entertainment. You will have far more scope than with the eglu run, and never underestimate how much they enjoy a bit more headroom!

You will have far more scope than with the eglu run, and never underestimate how much they enjoy a bit more headroom! Thank you Snowy I was planning on putting some shelves and branches up for them and basically just making life a little more interesting but I just got a sudden attack of doubt and wondered if, with it being so small, it would really make any difference to them in the long run. But of course, like you say, it is still bigger than the standard Eglu run and there is lots more scope to add entertainment for them. You really have made me feel better about it now-thank you
Laura & CTB
Jay - you will be amazed at how much more space they've got to play in as Snowy says the height makes a difference too and you'll have room for a dustbath, perches etc. and best of all - no more grovelling on the floor to get in the run Lots of piccies please
xScrunchee
Will post pics as soon as it's here. Just out of interest though-does anyone know the actual area of a standard Eglu run in square feet or metres? It can't be easy to measure as it's an odd shape and obviously the run skirt cannot be taken into account. I could go and measure it myself but it would take hours to work out the area so I'd thought I'd ask you clever lot instead! Just found a thing that says that the run is 2 sq metres-does that sound about right?? http://www.gizmag.com/go/3920/ (Edited to add link) [/url]
redfrock
8ft x 12ft - and over 7ft tall so Andy can walk in too - if it was just me it would only need to be just over 5ft tall It has a roof to keep them dry, roosting bars and a dust bath. It has an aubiose base. It seems to be plenty big enough, especially as they get to free range all weekend, any days when I am home, and evenings from 5.20pm (before the clocks went back ). The 3 rabbits have a 10ft x 19ft run between them! and again it is tall enough to walk into.
Snowy
Jay I think each section of the omlet run adds another square metre, so yes a standard run is 2 sqm. My run is only 5'3" high - I'm the only one who can get in without having to duck! But it's 2.5m x 4m - the same length as the eglu with run and converter but twice as wide because I've included the shrub border in the run, so 10sqm instead of 3! ali-s
My run is approx 24 foot long, half of the run is 8 foot wide and the other half is 6 foot wide. the height is about 5 foot 9 inches. Nine Bantams live in it
BERTIE MCSQUIRTY
the area that i have marked out to make a run is 3ft in depth but 40 ft long. the area has a couple of miniature fruit trees in there and will be about 7 ft high. i am worried about the 3 ft depth should i be? Mrs Frugal
The enclosed part of my run which has their Cube in is about 3m by 4m but they have a door out into their own open run as well which gives them an additional 3m x 6m space which is just for them (and the compost bin ). The enclosed part allows me to stand upright with room to spare which makes cleaning them out really easy.

Noodle
Mine is only going to be 5ft x 11ft which is even smaller and I'm paying nearly £400 for it!! Hi Jay Is you run coming flat packed? and where are you buying it from? Would be interested as I am thinking that my Omlet run maybe a little small for my girlies during the winter when I get home too late to let the free range as it is dark. Thanks

xScrunchee
Mine is only going to be 5ft x 11ft which is even smaller and I'm paying nearly £400 for it!! Hi Jay Is you run coming flat packed? and where are you buying it from? Would be interested as I am thinking that my Omlet run maybe a little small for my girlies during the winter when I get home too late to let the free range as it is dark. Thanks Hi ya, The run is being made by a man who I found on Ebay. It has worked out to be pretty expensive but he is making it to my exact measurements (11ft x 5ft), it will have a UV protected plastic roof, kickboards around the bottom to keep the hemcore in and he is bringing it all the way for Cambridge to Dagenham in Essex and he is putting it all together for me Grand total- £398 I have only had to pay 30% of it and will pay the rest once he has put it all together. Seems a nice man though cos he has answered my 'Oh so many' questions and I had A LOT!!! LOL It's also weld mesh not chicken wire and the whole frame is reinforced with wood so that it is very strong. The wood is all pressure treated too so all things considered I think it will be a good strong safe run!! (will let you know whne it's here on Saturday )
xScrunchee
The run is here and the girls are loving it. The man was very nice and put it all together and even put a little bolt on the inside for me so that the run stays closed when we are in it. Here are some pics...................................... superjules
What a lovely run! I like the utilisation of a radiator airer for hanging the grub and glug! Very inventive.
xScrunchee
What a lovely run! I like the utilisation of a radiator airer for hanging the grub and glug! Very inventive. You noticed the radiator airer then In the end I had to take the Glug off though as it is too heavy so at the moment it is on the floor between bricks so that they don't keep knocking it over! Will have to find a better way of hanging it or maybe I'll have to buy some rabbit water bottles and see if they will use them.
