Shirl
I went to put the girls to bed last night and 3 were missing. There were a small amount of feathers down by the fence but no other signs. I prayed that he might have taken just one and the other 2 were in hiding but there's no sign of them this morning. He took the 2 pekins and the poland. The 2 that survived are much better fliers and I'm so glad I decided not to get their wings clipped. I feel as though I need to take time to get over this before I get any more but I've told a friend she can borrow my eglu until spring. I was going to take it to her house on Monday but now I don't know whether to keep it so I can do slow introductions. It's too soon to make a decision but I feel like I have to for my friends sake. 2 small bantams in a cube over winter is that too much room/ My head is a whirl of emotion and guilt. Thanks if you got to the end. Shirl
Egluntyne
Sorry to hear your bad news. It might be too soon for you to make any decisions re the Eglu and getting new chooks just yet. Every one is different though, and you know yourself best. Your 2 banties will be fine, just the two of them in the Eglu. All the best. Olly
That's awful, so sorry to hear that. Take your time to make a decision - I'm sure your banties will be fine, they'll just snuggle up together.
Krysia
Sorry to hear about Mr Fox. I am sure your friend will understand. After all she can still borrow it just not yet. I know you shouldn;t rush into anything but I agree that a cube with 2 bantoms is such a waste of chicken housing Chicken shoping is better than any other

Cinnamon
I am sorry Shirl, that is horrible news. We would have had just 2 smallsters in an Eglu over winter, which is what prompted us to get 2 more (plus a cockerel which I hadn't planned on) a few weeks ago. Didn't bother with intros - just posted them through the egg port one night,to spend the night with my exsisting Bants, them left them to it after that. There was a small amount of beaking, but as it was 3 against 2 it all went very well,& they live together perfectly now. Don't feel like you are beholden to your friend....do what is right for you
Shirl
Thanks for the kind words and advice everyone. I think I've already decided I'll leave it until spring. I'm not going to leave the 2 girls freeranging until the longer days. By then hopefully Mr Fox will have given up the hope of any further feasts and fox food will be generally more plentiful. My friend is only having the Eglu until spring anyway when I was going to hatch some eggs. She needs to convince her hubbie that it's not a whim so I'm happy to help out a wanabee chicken keeper. Janty
So sorry to hear your news. We were lucky enough to see the fox in our garden last weekend and chase it or we would have been in the same position.
