Shirl
I feel really awful posting this but here goes. The OH had a packet delivered today. I opened it because I often put his name on my orders if I pinch his card to pay and I quite often forget what I ordered. Well it turns out to be an xmas pressie for me. Here's the link to what he bought. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Happy-Little-Hen-Shaker-Country-Living-style-textile_W0QQitemZ330192994510QQihZ014QQcategoryZ46292QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Now it's not that I don't like it exactly but I've got a white ultra modern kithcen so I can't hang it in there and have nowhere else suitable so I've got nowhere to put it. Also I don't like the wording but that's me being picky. If it were a fiver I'd say nothing rewrap and feign delight at xmas but at over £20 I think he should send it back. Oh I wish I hadn't opened it
Christian
Oh Shirl what a nightmare!!!! I did that too many moons aao and wasn't keen on the pressie at all! Just wrap it up and pretend you haven't looked. OH won the silent auction on here last year (?) and paid a lot more money for a similar picture by Helen Drewitt for me! It does fit into our house, but I do now what you mean. It would look lovely hanging above the one I already have! Good luck! feemcg
Tough one! I would keep it as I quite like it and have been swithering about buying it from 'Count Your Chickens' for ages. I think you'll have to say to him, especially if you're not going to put it up
Tessa the Duchess
I'm not crazy about the wording either, but the chicken is very cute Ok, if this happened to me I would wrap it up again pretend you don't know what it is and feign total surprise and delight on Christmas day. Your OH has chosen something which he thinks you will really like, he might be really hurt if you suggest he send it back? It a very personal and thoughtful gift. Find a place to hang it in the kitchen and then after a couple of weeks 'lose' it, he probably wont notice but that's just my opinion. Christian
What silent auction?? It was silent! No, there was a silent auction on here last year (?) please dont say it was the year before!!! AnnieP organised it, with all proceeds going to the BHWT. It was a framed Helen Drewitt picture with 2 chickens on. Hanging in my entrance hall at the moment! Sheilaz
I'd pretend I hadn't opened it & be really "surprised and delighted" on Christmas Day. You'll win an acting award! Really, I'd be pleased that someone cared to buy a special gift & I'd put it up whether I liked it or not. It should be a happy time for giver & recipient, it's not really about the item, he wanted to make you happy. Ahhhhh.... Perhaps he thought the kitchen needed something else? I've had the same with gifts from the children, corny figures with dreadful sayings. But I'm touched and display them. Just manage to remove some of them after a while....when they're replaced by another.

Guest
a dilemma indeed. I'd fess up and apologise and say you think he's obviously put a lot of thought into it and you love him very much for trying to give you an original gift and not the usual flowers/chocolates/perfume that most blokes would buy at the last minute (sorry boys ) but that it doesn't go with the decor and it would be such a shame not to hang it and is there any way he could possibly get a refund? Then give him a huge kiss and cuddle because I think it's lovely but it wouldn't go with my decor either, it would look fab in a country style kitchen though wouldn't it? Ah, bless him, he's really thought about that gift.

Guest
....mind you, if he thinks you like it he might buy you another one! gosh, this is a toughy! Put yourself in his shoes and think about how you'd feel and take it from there. When we were first going out and I didn't really know my OH that well, I had to buy him a birthday present. Not wanting to be predictable and get aftershave etc I went shopping. I knew he liked bands like the damned etc and that he used incense in his room and stuff so I bought him a huge candlelabra thing from a gothic type shop! I know, I know but it seemed like a good idea at the time, we still laugh about it now and that was about 16 years ago I still have trouble buying him gifts as he doesn't often say he likes anything unless it's really expensive and we can't afford it! He told me the other day that he'd quite like 'Guitar Hero 1' (with the guitar) for his PS2 but I can't find it anywhere brand new and I don't trust buying expensive items on e-bay. BeckyBoo
Oh how awful, it's one of those, wish I could turn the clock back things. I have to say I think I would accept it and feign surprise and delight on Christmas day. I had to do that with an AWFUL watch OH bought me which cost a lot of money but was not me AT ALL. Then after Christmas after a week or so I told him tactfully that though it was lovely I didn't think I'd ever wear it and would he be offended at all if I changed it for another one. Then I changed it for a watch I would wear (which I have subsequently lost in the sand on the beach and haven't told him yet ) Could you not try a similar tack? Accept it then after a week ask him if he'd mind very much if you changed it for something that did fit in or that you preferred? Maybe in the meantime contact the seller and ask what other things they have or if they would provide a refund. It's not my cup of tea either although my OH is getting me "chickeny things" so I could end up with it myself! Failing that, hang it in the loo like the Laura and Poet said. At least I won't find my present yet - OH hasn't even been shopping yet! And console yourself that it looks to me like he's thought about what he's getting you and put some effort in Mrs Bertie
Guest
I'm doing my DH's head in, I keep saying; "have you got me 'My Booky Wook'? Have you got me some wellies? (I want some green wellies) I know, you bought me some Thorntons or have you got me a pill box? etc etc" I need one of those pill boxes with the days of the week on them as I keep forgetting if I've taken me pills or not!? At least he's got plenty of ideas to go on!
Egluntyne
Tricky. Only you know how your OH is likely to react. Hang it in the spare bedroom or a dark corner of the hall. These things have a tendency to disappear of their own accord after a while. You could always put it on the "Free to a Good Home" section, or conduct a Silent Auction for the BHWT. Anyway....it might not be for you!

WitchHazel
What would you have done on Christmas day if you hadn't opened it in advance? I don't think you should tell him in advance that you opened it and don't like it, because, although you mean well, it will probably put him off trying to surprise you again. I really appreciate it when my husband puts thought and effort into pressies for me, even if he gets it wrong occasionally, especially because I know it doesn't come naturally to him. Instead, I would recommend you should practice your Christmas Day reaction, and think in advance of where you minght put it. Then build that into your reaction. For example "That's so lovely...I've been looking for something chicken related to put in XXX, and this will be perfect!" That way, the kitchen doesn't even come into the equation. You can always retire it later from wherever you put it.
Guest
"That's so lovely...I've been looking for something chicken related to put in XXX, and this will be perfect!" . How about, ""That's so lovely...I've been looking for something chicken related to put in the shed/garage/attic!" Sorry, just kidding
Shirl
Oh Lord the general census is I need to rewrap and feign surpsrise. I'll see how I go and maybe it'll be on here in the new year
Snowy
Must admit I'm very impressed that he thought about your present, let alone that he went on line and bought it! My OH remembered my birthday the evening before so nipped out to the newsagents and bought me 3 boxes of chocs - one from each of the children. Which they all ate next morning. I bought HIM a new mobile for HIS birthday He will get a stocking at christmas, as will the children. Guess what I'll get? Thats right, chocolates.
