Olly
anyone else watch this? I am (uncharacteristically) lost for words!
Egluntyne
Have Sky + it. I imagined it was along the lines of Flour Babies but my son informs me it is not!
Olly
er - no! I won't spoil it if you haven't watched it yet. I'm still trying to get my head round the whole idea!
Sheilaz
I knew I couldn't watch it or I'd want one/some. Not responsible viewing for someone my age who still gets broody. Presumably there were some weird cases, as the trailer suggested? Lucky I have the chickens to nurture.
Guest
very worrying. I did feel sorry for that woman whose grandson was taken to the other side of the world after she'd looked after him for so long, but the poor woman needs councilling not a fake baby! Very funny when her grandson said to her "it's a doll you numbnut" I can't believe that other woman spending nearly £300 on baby clothes for A DOLL!??? Quite unsettling, the whole thing. bronze
I saw about five minutes but had to stop as it made me feel odd.
Olly
It was the total sincerity with which she said '.. it's not wasting money'. I don't quite know what I think - the dolls are very, very lifelike - and I don't want to judge others' choices, if it makes them happy then good luck to them. Having dolls in the living-room or bedroom is not my own taste, but I can understand that some people love to see them. I think it was the idea of pushing a doll around outdoors in a pram that I am struggling to comprehend.
Egluntyne
There was a time when someone like that would be locked away for their own good.
chrisnrob
I think it was the idea of pushing a doll around outdoors in a pram that I am struggling to comprehend. It was the fact that she had a feeding bottle full of fabric conditioner as 'fake formula milk' that she took out with her that I found the strangest, I think... The whole experience was decidedly 'odd'. I think that we were being led up a path with the lady who's grandson had moved to NZ - I think we were supposed to think that he'd died Rob
Couperman
Yes, and erm, well, weird. Watching Shameless now and that makes more sense. Kev
Karen & co.
I think that we were being led up a path with the lady who's grandson had moved to NZ - I think we were supposed to think that he'd died Rob I thought that too infact I also thought her daughter had died as they talked about her having cancer, and in the end Harry living with them nearly all the time Very odd program karen x
Guest
I watched, and found it all very sad. Especially the first woman, who never had children because she didn't like mess and disorganisation, but was willing to fly herself over to America for the delivery of her new doll. The grandmother didn't bother me quite so much, in a way it's like my mother keeping a newborn doll on her bed, wearing my Christening gown, only more extreme. Lesley
I've Sky+'d it (and had to wizz past all the previous comments) - will watch it later
missuscluck
I saw this. I too am not to sure what to think. Personally not my taste to keep dolls but I can see that people do and you cant deny the lady making them has artistic talent. I felt a bit like the program makers were hamming it up a bit. In one long hour show they could only find one nutter and one very sad lady who missed her grandson so very much she wanted a doll to cuddle. Made all the sadder by her darling grandson whom she loves so dearly calling her a numnut!! I too was waiting for someone to have died. The other lady, well lets just say she has issues..... The old lady who they visited just looked like a straght forward collector to me. More uncomfortable fly on the wall documentary. Looking forward to Hugh on monday night, lets see what thats like. Guest
I thought the child must have died too, the program makers/editors were distorting things to a degree. I had a look on e-bay out of curiousity and there were 'reborn' dolls on there, ranging from £20 to £80. There's an artist called Ron Mueck and the dolls reminded me of one of his installations of a baby. His art is very life like indeed except that he distorts it in some way. Usually his creations are much larger than life. There was one of his at The Tate in Liverpool called 'Ghost' which I identified with, she looks like she has Marfan Syndrome. I think his background is in special effects. Google some of his work, it's fascinating but weird!
bronze
I came across lots of creepy reborn dolls when I was looking for clothes for Nia when she was first born. If you search for prem clothes on ebay loads of reborn stuff comes up. for some reason I could never buy stuff for her that had reborn mentioned though I did buy her some dolls clothes. I thought that her grandchild had died too. Oh it all makes me feel a bit ill. I sadly (now) know quite a few people who have lost children young including my mum and not one of them seems to have the urge to have a fake. My Mum said the idea repulsed her too. I agree the woman is an incredible artist but I wish the dolls were viewed more as art or dolls int he same way as porcelain dolls are. bronze
Btw when I saw it I'm sure I saw a glimpse of one with a cpap nasal tube in. Was that right. Was someone honestly pretending to have an ill baby?

The Dogmother
I'm glad I didn't see it, as a non-TV watcher, I tend to miss most of the garbage. Phil pointed it out to me and said 'don't even consider watching it - it'll start you ranting'!!!! I must say that it all sounds rather disturbing. Charlottechicken
I didn't see the programme but I had heard about these reborn dolls and thought that they were creepily realistic. I didn't realise that some people (well women I suppose) try and pass them off as real babies I believe there is someone who sells 'demonised' ones on ebay too (red eyes and horns added )
Egluntyne
That is weirder in a way than Munchaussens by proxy!.....although of course no child is being harmed. Very odd.
Tessa the Duchess
I don't really watch the telly, so didn't see this. It all sounds very sad to me. As a women who tried for many years to get pregnant with no success, I know all too well what longing for a baby does to you. In my experience if you really want your own baby you can't bear to be in the company of babies and small children, I know other childless women who felt this way too. So I have no idea what desire these 'reborns' mothers are satisfying All a bit weird and sad. Tessa
The Dogmother
Tessa, sounds like they want babies without all the mess and hassle
chickenlass
I too only saw a few minutes of the programme and it left me feeling very uneasy..I did wonder if it was a wind up at one point but when I realised it wasn't I switched it off. I really felt quite disturbed watching it. I'm sure these women must need psychiatric help
