Jayne H
Here are my three new girls who arrived yesterday. They are much younger than I've kept before but I decided to try my hand with some real youngsters as I have indoor faciities, and let's be honest they are sooooo cute! The littlest one is just 2 weeks old but was sexed when newly hatched so is definitely a girl, she is a speckled and will actually become my 'big girl' when she's adult. The other 2 are both cross breeds - the black one is currently the largest and is a silkie cross and is 7 weeks old and the yellow/white one is about 4 weeks old. They have not been sexed but the lady who sold them to me is 80% sure they are female by comparing them to their siblings. However she will take them back if they turn into cockerels Sadly living in the suburbs a boy is not an option, although I'm sure I'll be devastated if I have to return them They are already making a big impact on the family, they are so funny and very entertaining to watch - real timewasters They came from Oak Meadow Farm in Clent. Anyway, without further ado, here they are: [/img]

Duckmomma
Ooooh they are sooooooo lovely, I love the black ones. I love to raise chicks and ducklings, they are so much fun I've hatched all sorts including pheasant and quail, but chicks and ducklings are the sweetest. I notice you have them on sawdust Do you find it gets in the food and water pots and ends up as mush? Rubber shelf grip is good to keep them on, with a layer of newspaper under it, the water goes through the holes and is absorbed by the paper. All you have to do is rinse it under the tap and dry it, then put it back on top of fresh paper, no more sawdust for them to kick into the water You can put a bit of old towel in the box for them to snuggle up on. Also if you keep water and food at seperate ends of their cage the food wont get all wet and make a big mess everywhere. Sorry Hope you don't mind me sticking my beak in LOL

feemcg
Lovely chicks - can't wait for mine to hatch . Interesting about the sex of the 1st chick - I was under the impression that in Cuckoo Marans/Speckledy the boys had the large head spots . Jayne H
Lovely chicks - can't wait for mine to hatch . Interesting about the sex of the 1st chick - I was under the impression that in Cuckoo Marans/Speckledy the boys had the large head spots . You've got me worried now All I can tell you is that Gail at Oak Farm buys in the Speckleds as tiny babies and she told me they are all sexed on the day they are hatched before she gets them,as she only buys females. I have no idea how they go about sexing a day old chick but she assured me that they do and therefore I was guaranteed that the chick is a female. If it turns into a boy I'll let you know - and of course I'll be sending it back to Gail(sad but I live in a town and couldn't keep a cockerel ) It'd be funny if the 'guaranteed' girl was a boy,and the '80%' sure where both girls Just a thought - If anyone out there ever produces a silent cockerel they'll make an awful lot of money won't they? KateP
that second one looks like it's going to be a little tinker! They are gorgeous! I agree though - the second one does look like a bit of a trouble maker!
Jayne H
Strange you should mention the yellow/gold one as she's already developing into a little character, jumped onto my hand today when I was changing the food pot and sat there clinging to my little finger. They are all remarkably calm but she will actively come to me if I'm near the cage, really nosey
chocchick
They are gorgeous. It is such a chickeny thing to do to stand in the food like that.
Duckmomma
Not sure if this web site is any help to you It might already have been posted on here before, but just in case http://animalsciences.missouri.edu/reprod/ReproTech/Feathersex/index.htm Your birds might already be to old for feather sexing any way but it might be worth a try
