little chickadee
Who has had to dress their children up for Book Day today? We had a franic rush last night. My son wanted to be Mr Twit (Roald Dahl) , so I spent yesterday evening knitting bits of food to sew to his beard. My OH doesn't like me putting pictures of our kids on here, but I think that this is suitably disguised!!! (I've just checked with OH and he's ok about it!) MedusA
What a fabulous "Mr Twit". My daughter loved Roald Dahl too. The BFG was probably her favourite.
Snowy
Brilliant! My boys love the Twits as well - very good disguise!!
bronze
Ours dress up on the 6th which is world book day. I'm loving the beard
chickencam
our school is doing it on the 6th as well, but I am still waiting for inspiration YD has gone as Paddington bear for the last 2 years and is keen to do so again mainly because she won the class prize last year, but because DS also used the same outfit a couple of years earlier I think it has done its time Although it is quite topical at the moment being the 50th anniversary of Paddington this week I loved him and read every book when I was younger and have read them to my kids DS went as a character from Cherub the child spy series by Robert Muchamore last year which involved loads of photocopying and enlarging of the cherub logo and then putting it onto a t -shirt transfer and ironing it onto an old orange t-shirt, which probably broke every copyright rule in the book. At least he went as a book character too many kids at our school go as film characters which to me misses the point YD has been reading Malory Blackman books so it is harder to come up with characters that involve any dressing up
little chickadee
I've found in my kids new school, a lot more people go as book characters. There are still plenty of disney outfits though.
Rhapsody
I remember a few years ago as I was loading him into the car my eldest said "Its Book Day Mum, I have to go dressed as a fictional character" and I produced the now-legendary 5 Minute Frodo. Aidan is small and brown haired with big brown eyes so looked the part, then on with a shirt, waistcoat and some old uniform knickerbockers (dont ask!) from prep school, a blanket tied with a brooch and an old hoop earring on a chain around his neck, eyebrow pencil painted hair on his bare feet and a walking stick from the garden- voila!! he won the first prize book token much to the chagrin of the mum who spent a week making a set of armour out of papier mache! chickencam
well done I felt a bit guity when mine won last year because we had used that outfit several times but I think it is easily recognisable and brings back fuzzy memories for the teachers. It did originally involve a lot of charity shop searching for a suitable coat and hat and we made a marmelade sandwich out of orange paper any polystyrene and a cardboard bacon rasher for the suitcase which was an old brown cassette case, so we did make an effort to start with
Snowy
I'm sure ours have already done this a few weeks ago Anyway, I am hopeless at fancy dress and dread these things - and we get the last minute reminders too. So I threw on what we had and he went as Bob the Builder (I know, I know but we were desperate ). Best thing was, the headmaster also dressed as Bob and in assembly asked all the Bobs to stand up. There was only my little poppet in reception! So he got his photo taken with the head Poor thing!
Cinnamon
Goodness, this takes me back. When Devon was about 8 she dressed up as Cinderella (the scruffy one!), which was very easy. Just a Gypsy style dress I found for £2 in H&M, an old apron with patches sewn on & some dirty marks ,a headscarf, & a little broom left over from Halloween. She won the school competition for that year & her photo was in the local paper I do remember the playground being FULL of littl Harry Potters yelling 'EXPELIARMUS' at each other
superjules
Ours is Friday. After having a disaster in the lead up to the Christmas play and sewing in a sleeve of DSs santa costume inside out after a glass or two of wine, I'm approaching this from a different angle. We've checked our dressing up box and the most presentable costumes are a tiger and a knight, so DD is going as "The Tiger who came to Tea" and DS can decide whether he is Sir Lancelot or Peter from Narnia. I don't feel like making costumes this week, even less so after today's events, and it takes even more time and money scouring charity shops for stuff to make an outfit (our charity shops seem to have delusions of grandeur concerning their prices !). Ziggy
What a timely thread!! Just got back from town trying to sort out my girls' outfits for this year... ours is on the 6th too. I usually enjoy this kind of things, but with three daughters in school age it's getting to be a lot of work for just the one day... also sometimes it's just so hard to make a child look like a character, last year DD1 wanted to be Alex Rider... how on earth do I make a long haired 10 year old look like a 15 year old teenage boy?? This year DD1 and DD2 want to go as Calvin and Hobbes!!! Nice in theory, but not so easy to realise at short notice, without wanting to spend too much in the process... obviously I had no orange clothes for Hobbes or red t-shirt for Calvin... got some orange stuff from M&S in the sales, at least I didn't have to spend too much. But not a plain red T-shirt to be found in any store!!! DD3 wants to go as Kipper from the Oxford reading tree magic key stories... she went as Floppy last year and looked really cute. I got her a rugby shirt, and some light coloured jeans that she can wear again (she didn't have jeans in her wardrobe!!! Only pink and girly stuff), and we'll make a cardboard magic key to carry around. She too has long dark hair though, not sure how to make it look short and yellow... bought some yellow hairspray, and will improvise with that... A lot of running around and a lot of work.... each year I say 'next year I'm not doing this'... and of course a year later I still go running trying to make it look good!! Guest
We have agonised over this one. The final decision was Postman Pat, he has a hat, glasses and bag that was a dress up kit and he also has a lovely black and white cuddly cat that can be Jess. He will wear his school joggers which are the right colour and his school fleece with the collar pinned down as jacket lapels and a couple of brass buttons sewn on the front. A white shirt and black tie will complete the look. I wish he was a girl I suspect there will be a lot of Cinderellas and sleeping beauties! Ziggy
So far I've spent most of the day drawing black stripes with a fabric marker pen on orange clothes for our 'hobbes' costume... only one leg left to do, then making some ears... and then I can move on to the other two costumes... How's everyone else doing?
chickencam
how did you get on today or is it tomorrow for some still? YD went as My Naughty Little Sister, did anyone else read these books when they were small?
missuscluck
ooh good Im glad its not just me. Katie was in a show last week and we were hoping she was going to be given her costume at the end of the show which was a tail coat so we were going to turn her into williw wonka. However she came out with out it so we have had to think again. So... I bought some cheap gingham and have made her a pinifore dress and some plaits in and a basket with a cuddly dog in and voila.. dorothy from the wizard of oz. All started because she has a pair of red shoes!! Our dress up day is tommorrow.
Karen & co.
some plaits in and a basket with a cuddly dog in and voila.. dorothy from the wizard of oz. . Sarah wanted to go as Dorothy with out the red shoes or fabric I thought it was a bit tricky passing Dorothy off as a heroine as this year the school have themed it so in the end she went as Arya from Eragon, with a rather cool sword made by OH last thing last night She nearly came home with orders for more Karen x
Helly Welly
We has ours yesterday. Abi went as Laura Ingalls from the "Little house on the prairie" books, which she is devouring at the moment. Easy outfit too. A yellow gingham school summer dress, with a long sleeve top underneath as it was nippy yesterday. Long white socks and big brown boots. She carried a small wicker basket with the book and a slate in it. None of the kids knew who she was but the teachers did. Most of her class went as High School Musical, they had the book of the film which i think is cheating. No one ever seems to go as a proper book character. clucky1
I will let you know a GREAT secret (all dressing up competition/easter bonnet hat - will be won) Your kids WILL think that you are that goddess afterall ! Buy some of that clear plastic sheeting (from most stationers) You know the stuff that you can bind files together or use to write on- for projectors. - Cut into inch strips - about 8 " in length. - Stick something to one end e.g: decorative fluffy chicks- mini-eggs etc. - stick the other end to the costume or hat. The fluffy-chicks will 'amazingly' look like they are floating in mid-air
