Bluebelle hens

Recommended Posts

I know quite a few people on here have a bluebelle girlie, so hopefully someone can help me out...

Had several different breeds of chooks before, but Queeny is our first bluebelle. She laid her first egg today, which gives us a vague idea of how old she is.... I'm guessing she still has a bit of growing to do, but she seems enormous!! So big, she's been nicknamed godzilla hen! And Vivienne, our speckledy who tries to remain top of the pecking order, just seems overshadowed by her.

Because we have just the two, how big she gets doesn't really matter so much because she's have plenty of room - I was just curious as to how big your bluebelle girls are? Are they generally a big breed and should I expect her to grow anymore? I know they're hybrids so I'm guessing it varies slightly  Never mind - big hen = big eggs!!!!

Hi Imo, I'm new to this but my Bluebelle is much bigger than my silver sussex x and ranger. They all started laying last week so not sure if they will get bigger.

Sadly the bigger egg theory doesn't seem to hold for my three - my little ranger is the most reliable layer of reasonably sized eggs and we have had a run of softies from the Bluebelle :(

Thanks for that surferdog!! Anyone else found Bluebelle's to be reliable/unreliable layers? And what kind of egg colour should I expect?

The first one today was very small and perfectly formed, but I'm treating it as a prototype!! It's got slight brown speckles on it too...

After our string of bantams, I have to say I'm pleased to have two standard sized chooks again - I missed having the bigger eggs every day!!

My Bluebelle is the biggest of our hens - her legs are so such bigger - egg wise they are cream, usually around 60g, but we are still getting 2-3 double yokers weighing 80+g every week. She is soo sweet being bigger has not been an issue with the other girls. My Blackrock who is smaller consistently lays bigger eggs. Now that I am getting 3/3 eggs every day to be honest I have more than enough, so do not need to worry about egg size!

Yeh, Queeny's legs are really big too!! i think she's beautiful :)

Her first egg today was 43g, so not too bad for a first one

I'm not overly fussed about egg size now - like I said, we've had bantams for ages so egg production has been low over the colder months, and eggs were always tiny if we got any from the bantams :) I'm just excited over the first few eggs - however big or small!

My first Bluebelle, Fandango is a big fat rugby-ball shaped hen who lays enormous speckled eggs every day. Her record is 110 grams!

My other Mutant Orange Bluebelle is smaller with a tiny comb and lays Bantam-sized eggs with a beautiful pearly sheen. But then she is weird.

My Bluebelle is also small, but lays almost every day.

She was the only one left when I went to buy her, so I suspect she was the runt of the flock; but as a result she is a gentle little darling.

So they obviously vary in size.

Hi Our Bluebelle Penny is considerably bigger than my other two a light sussex and amber star. They are all around 25 weeks now. She is the most vocal (almost like a cockeral without the last "do"). She is also really quick (nearly took my hand off when i put a sprout through the bars on the run of the eglu yesterday) and scratches for England when free ranging oblivious of anything that may be in the way. Saying that she is always first to greet you and has the most amazing antics when out and about. Her eggs are creamy pink and often torpedo shaped but not necessarily very big. A definate character

Our Bluebelle Tilly is also quite small. She is a very reliable layer, with creamy, long pointy eggs. I have noticed that the shells have been a bit thinner recently, so you just need a light tap to crack the eggs, rather than the crashing and bashing Bockett & Biscuit, the ISA brown's eggs need. I think they must be manufacturing concrete!

My Bluebelle is sort of rounder than my Light Sussex hybrid (who is quite a lseek looking bird) but not really bigger, just a different shape. She is smaller than one of my-ex-batts.

She is also the scruffiest of my hens, which makes her look bigger.

She lays a very round pale pink egg. She was a regular layer but also had regular days off too eg 2 days on/1 day off or 3 days on/1day off. My Light Sussex girl was 6-7 days on 1 day off.

Both have slowed down now though.

I got Sophie, my Bluebelle, at the beginning of December (along with Sally) and I think she's the one who just laid 2 eggs this week! Great excitement all round... Her eggs are a browny, creamy pink colour - one is torpedo shaped and one round. She's the quietest and friendliest of my three (the other two are Polly - Miss Pepperpot and Sally, a light Sussex). Sally doesn't have a proper comb yet so I don't think they're her eggs.

My bluebell is quite large compared to our ex batts. We got her at the beginning of December and she hasn't laid yet so can't comment on the eggs. She is kind of crazy and charges around everywhere. She loves climbing and has reached heights that none of our ex batts ever have but then she is half the age they are when they get to us and much fitter. She has her wing clipped but I am going prematurely grey every time I find her somewhere new!! She is very sweet however she is a lot more cautious about us than our other hybrid girl of the same age that we got at the same time. She is getting more used to us though.

My Bluebelle, Eva, was the largest of the 3 hens I bought last October, she is also the least easy to handle, her eggs have been pale brown, sometimes with a light speckle to the broad end of the egg and sometimes with a purplish hue to the egg?? They also were smaller than those of my Rhode Rock and Coral girls eggs FWIW???

My Belle is very large (chunky breast and legs), quite scatty, very cautious of us, and a champion dust-bather. She likes to be high up - often jumps up on top of the run when FRing, which the others have never done. She's also a mean 'croucher' - wings way up, right low to the ground, and trembling with the effort (or maybe fear  ). If we pick her up, or even dare to touch her (gasp!) she gives a big fluff-and-shake

My bluebelle is huge - think legs and she's a tall, meaty bird (!) - probably the most noticeable thing about her is what a gentle giant she is. She's placid, pleasant to know and like to hang around from time to time.

She's a pretty reliable layer (6 or 7 when not moulting).

Also, they also get much prettier as they get older...

Bluebell (our Bluebelle - not very original I know) is best described as resembling Miranda on the TV. A bit big and clumspy but really funny and somehow keen to please. Her eggs are very pale brown but not torpedo shaped and normally weigh in the low 60g's. She's not top chook of our 3 - that's our Light Sussex. We also have a Grey speckled that we call dozy Daisy as that sums her up.

Our Bluebelle is the thickest chicken out! We purposefully chose a small one so our other girls didn't get upset...I think we chose the one with no brains. Primrose took a long time to be one of the girls...being picked on for a long time. She has a degree in hiding/escaping from the others through the smallest of holes. We got her last August and it has only been this week I have been able to go out with one treat bowl and they have all eaten from the same bowl at once. (Previously 2 bowls or else Primrose would get nothing as beaten off by the others.) She lays beautiful brown eggs most days with quite a hard shell.
