ajm200
I've just had a call from a friend who told me that I'm considered a trouble maker after allowing her 10 year old daughter to do a 'show and tell' about my backyard chickens.. She took pictures of the chickens and the cube to school. Explained how we look after the hens, what they eat and why we keep them. I know this doesn't sound bad but without thinking I told her one reason we have them is that I think battery farming is cruel. She didn't ask any more about battery hens so I thought no more of it but she did her own research on the web with the help of her older brother and printed off pictures of some of some sorry looking battery hens to show her classmates. She ended her presentation by showing pictures of the battery hens, and insisting everyone buy their own hens and stop eating supermarket eggs as supermarket eggs are bad. She's also saving up her pocket money for her own hens... I guess a few parents are being pestered for hens now.. I hate to cause trouble.. Oops... Tiggy
kids will get all of us into trouble, but no bad thing if more of them are interested in where their food really comes from, maybe this generation will be better at eating real food & not just cheap junk
Phonix
never mind lol She seems like one determined 10 year old and if her classmates bug their parents enough they may agree on a mid-point and agree to buy free range goods! x

The Dogmother
Good for her and you. I had the same problem when I took our girls in to school and brownies - the mums all hated me for a while

Guest
i can think of a few people who were/are considered trouble makers... Jesus Gandhi Martin Luther King The Dali Lama Bob Geldof history is full of 'trouble makers' who changed the world for the better. Don't worry about causing a bit of upset if it's done to make the world a better place. good on both of you!
Ziggy
Good for her, I agree... My 8 year old took pics of her ex-batts, and leaflets from the BHWT to school too... and asked the headmistress to check that all eggs used at school should be free range... and the headmistress checked and confirmed... It's nice to see kids think and speak up for what they have learned

I wouldn't have said that they were trouble makers Poet, just that they saw things differently and wanted others to as well. Passion is what it's about; passion to make a difference. None of the above have ever condoned violence (to my knowledge) but it has been used in their name plenty of times. That's why 3 of them were assasinated. **edit** I totally believe in standing up for what you believe in, despite the fact there will always be people who will have it in for you. Bob Geldof's "Is This It" should be on the national curriculum as far as I'm concerned and I am one of Gandhi's biggest fans!
Helly Welly
She wasn't a troublemaker at all, in fact, i'd say to any parent moaning that you're dead proud of her. They are only moaning because they clearly don't buy free-range eggs. It's the same when children learn about recycling at school. Luckily, we're recycling fanatics so we should be safe from any nagging by DD.
Guest
She wasn't a troublemaker at all, in fact,. that was my point, just because some people "consider" you a troublemaker, it doesn't mean you are. Take no notice of them. They've probably got splinters in their backsides
BeckyBoo
But it's made them talk about it though hasn't it? And if they're talking then they're thinking, and they're probably being nagged too by their children if mine are anything to go by. Good effort, start em young that's what I say! You never know, even if one more mum buys free range then thats six eggs every week or so and if I could do maths I'd tell you how many that was a year but basically that's one whole battery hen off the hook. Ain't Nobody Here
Informing the other kids, and thus their parents, can only be a good thing . Just hope any chickenkeepers-to-be read Claret's "Prudence" thread
Hen Huggers R Us
Well done, there can't be too much eggsposier on the plight of these poor girls and the way they suffer for our eating pleasure.

Mutrix Farmers
Good on you and your daughter ajm200. More children need to be told about the horrors of intensive food production, they are after all the consumers of tomorrow, and if their parents don't educate them, who will? hope the teacher appreciated all the hard work she did to prepare her talk! She gets a gold star from me!
superjules
Well done to little miss ajm200. Hope these moaning parents get bitten by their consciences!
fionne
Well done for educating her peers!! Children should know what is right and if they don't know the horrors of battery farming - they should!! My youngest daughter won a debate at her public school on anti fox hunting!! That took some doing as there were lots of hunters there. She converted quite a few to her side. I have always taught my two to stand by their principles even if its unpopular and they are very good at standing up for what they consider is right. If other people complain it shows ignorance!!
