Introducing the Hogwarts Girls

Recommended Posts

Beautiful little ones Egluntine. Although I won't be able to keep 18, right now I'm saving for another Eglu (unless the Cube becomes available here  ) I like the idea of blue/green eggs. I was thinking about getting 2 Acaucana, a Speckledy, and a Leghorn this spring. Of course I will only get mixed breeds if the have a reputation of getting on with each other. I around easter when alot of spring chicks become available. Do you have any thought about the mixture of breeds? :)

Congratulations Egluntine, they look lovely girls, will they definitely lay blue green eggs?

They look so small with the beautiful new red eglu in the background and with the big girl looking into the run.

Thanks for sharing the pictures with us. Please keep us posted on their progress.

18 now. That is definitely it for a good while.

I bet you said that when you had 6, and again when you reached 12.

I swore I would stop at 6 but somehow have reached 11. The eggs are becoming a nuisance, rather than the raison d'être. It's quite worrying.

My three chicks are eight weeks old today but don't look as cute as yours, as they lost a lot of feathers before I got them to the adult hens living with them. And one of them is purple, as I rather overdid the purple spray.

They will eat anything already: they love potato.

Edited: sorry, they are 8 weeks, not 6. Time flies.

 Definitely stopping now (until the older ones shuffle off their mortal coils...or at least the hen equivalent.)

I've only given mine growers pellets so far....but I am amazed at how much they pack away.

I swear they have grown since yesterday.

When I look at them properly they are very different, so easy to tell apart.

Boggart is the lightest, moving through alphabetically speaking to Quidditch who is the darkest.

I was a bit scared of giving them anything but chick crumbs and then growers' pellets to start with; but I recommend giving them tiny pieces of potato or fruit through the run bars when they get to seven weeks. Since I have been doing this, they come running towards me, whereas last week they always ran away from me.

(I've just remembered my chicks are now eight weeks, not six.)

I won't be getting any more hens, and plan to go back down to eight through the natural course of things; but I think this resolution will only last until the spring.

But, what on earth are you going to do with all those eggs :lol::lol::lol:

Keep the neighbours sweet and give them to friends and family......and bake!

Three or four of the maiden aunts aren't laying anymore so it isn't as overwhelming as it looks, and the "Three H's" haven't started laying yet either, so in fact I only have six or seven layers at the moment.....and they will tail off over winter.

The "Three H's" should start soon, their faces are reddening, and hopefully will lay over winter.

That's the plan, anyway! :D

Gorgeous!!!! !8 though... wow, you are brave, i think oh would go nuts with me if we have any more... even though we've just aquired a spare eglu incase they start pecking again. I did test the water and say we could maybe get some more.... i cant repeat the answer, he loves them as much as i do though, i just think he knows i would get absolutely nothing done in the house if we did!!!

Is that hemcore or auboise?... ours looks much chunckier and a bit darker... we use hemcore at moment.
