Mrs Frugal
Gorgeous sunny day here yesterday. Not a cloud in the sky. My next door neighbour spent the entire day sat outside in the garden next to her rotary washing line while her tumble drier rumbled away in the kitchen. Why??? Guest
That drives me INSANE!!!!!!! I have a tumble drier (inherited from the last owners) and I've used it about 3 times for emergency uniform drying! From a purely selfish point of view- why pay for the electricity when you can get wind power for free? Edited June 13, 2006 by Guest
Karen & co.
We have one parked in the garage from when the children were in nappies, that gets used for towels if I can't get them dry anyother way, (too wimpish to use it for many other things incase I shrink them ) Anyway, I like clothes to line dry! karen x
Cookie
And things smell soooo lovely when they're line dried Clean sheets, fresh from the line on to the bed - nothing beats it! Cookie. xx

Mrs Frugal
I have 2 teenagers (well one of them is almost a teenager), a husband and myself to do the washing for and I've not had a tumble drier for 12 years now. I manage quite nicely. If I can't line dry (and let's face it, you can line dry for half the year, can't you), I use airers in the house. I've been able to wash coats and get them dry for the next day when the boys have come home muddy or wet, jeans dry overnight in the airing cupboard which is the size of a cutlery drawer but in an emergency it does fine, duvets dry overnight hanging on the airer or in an afternoon on the line. There is absolutely no need for her to use a tumble drier in this weather! She lives alone for goodness sake ! How much washing can one woman make which would justify having the drier on all day when it's blazing hot outside and there's a rotary washing line just a few steps from the back door. Aaaaaargh! Cinnamon
I do have a tumble drier,& I do use it,but NEVER when its warm enough to line dry I use my drier mostly for knickers & socks,& for the girls non-iron school shirts. I hate to have dripping washing everywhere,it means I don't have to iron & also some friends who drip dry have their heating on more than I do just to get the clothes dry. I think its a case of finding a happy balance & working out what works for your home & lifestyle. Bizarre to do it when its so hot though.there is nothing like the smell of line fresh clothes
bunee1
MENTALIST.......I have a tumble dryer but only because we have a very small house without much room for drying....It has'nt seen action for nearly 3 months.... because our house is so small i use it for storage during the summer ....i can't get some people, i bet she was too lazy to hang it out (wastes precious tanning time) :oops:should'nt be nasty. I don't have any space to dry inside and I'm not around in the day to take it in if it rains. Mine is a condenser dryer, so I use the water it expels on my plants - makes me feel less guilty for using it. ali-s
My drier is donkeys years old and on its last legs. OH is a sparky and has repaired it many times. Sometimes it overheats and other times it does not heat up at all I do use it in the winter for drying bedding and towels. It gets very damp up here in winter and our garden does not get any sun between October and March as the sun does not high enough. Not sure how I will dry things when it dies, I haven't got and airing cupboard, ceilings are too low for a Sheila maid and no utility room. Towels always go crispy when dried on the radiators. Mrs Frugal
I'm not ranting at the use of tumble driers . Years ago we had one and it was on all the time over winter so I'm guilty of tumble drier abuse . I've not got one now because it went pop and we never got round to replacing it. The rant was because it was a perfect drying day and there she was, sat right next to an empty rotary clothes line with the tumbler tumbling! Throwing money away and wasting energy - my two big bugbears !
Martin B
We use the tumble drier for our school uniform but we have a line thing for the rest of the stuff!

kannie
I don't have any space to dry inside and I'm not around in the day to take it in if it rains. I'm with Cinnamon & Claret on this. I hang most clothes on the backs of doors or over radiators to dry, but sheets are a bit of a problem... Starting to feel guilty now though
The Dogmother
I hate having clothes hanging round the house,a nd they take ages to dry that way. I had to think long and hard before getting a tumble dryer because of the extra expense and the cost of the extra electricity, but now I wouldn't be without it. I use the water from the condenser to water my plants and I only use it when the weather stops me from drying outside.
Lesley
I had to think long and hard before buying a drier as well. There was so much building work going on in the village that for three years, anything outside was always covered in a dusting of cement or nice orange sand - or smoke from the continual bonfires I also use the water from the condenser to water the herbs by the back door. We don't have a washing line here at the farm, but as soon as we decide where everything is going we will have one and use it. I also find that using the drier means I have even less ironing to do (I don't iron much)
