superjules
Our blue pekin boy Sonic was culled today at 4 months old. He started crowing 4 weeks ago so I contacted the pekin club but "Ooops, word censored!"ody was interested in him. I took him to Thorne's today and Frank regretfully did the deed for me, even he was impressed by how beautiful he was. The kids think he's gone to a farm and I won't be setting them straight on that score. He had a nice life, short though it was and he had a good, quick, painless death at the hands of an experienced poultryman. Thanks to everyone on here who shared in Sonic's life. Here's some pics:

superjules
Thanks. I hatched him with the knowledge that this may be the outcome, but it's a shame and we'll miss him.

Ain't Nobody Here
How sad, poor Sonic - he was a lovely boy . Hard decision for you, but I know you had no choice.
superjules
Thanks everyone. I'd really love to see the pics Lisa.
Egluntyne
It is a shame, but you wisely accepted that this would be the outcome from the off if you couldn't rehome him.
BeckyBoo
Well done you, that must have been hard. We may have that with one of our boys htat I thought we'd homed but has now fallen through. None of our boys have crowed yet but it's a matter of a week or so I should imagine. Hope it doesn't put you off hatching though, I know people may frown and say we shouldn't do it if we're just going to kill the boys but I'd rather keep my broody happy and re-stock my own flock and give the boys a chance at some happy life than buy from somewhere that just gasses them at birth. Lots of love, he was a stunner. Mrs B
superjules
Thanks for the pics Lisa. Now don't you point that finger at me!!
jomaxsmith
That was brave Jules, but as you said you were realistic about the outcomes when you went in for hatching. We are so lucky to have the expertise of Thornes nearby. Perhaps this thread should go in the hatching sticky so that people realise there aren't an unlimited number of farms willing to take unwanted cockerels and that they need to be prepared that some of their cute fluffy chicks will have to be culled. ((hugs)) Jo
Bondinho
Well done you, that must have been hard. We may have that with one of our boys htat I thought we'd homed but has now fallen through. Have you tried the user on pekin site and pracitcal poultry site that rehomes unwanted cockerels and pullets? I believe they will take any birds if they have space available. http://www.pekinbantams.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=26905 Sorry to hear about Sonic but sounds like you went into it fully prepared for this outcome unlike others do. Gamebird
Brave decison to make. It would be hypocritical to be shocked by this decision. To give us the female hens means that a lot of cockerels have been hatched and despatched and at least Superjules knows her cockerel had a good life and it ended swiftly.
