Eglu arriving tomorrow!!

Recommended Posts

Can't quite believe it but the day has finally arrived and my (green eglu) will be coming tomorrow!! :D

I'm starting to get a bit nervous - I hope I can be a good chicken mum!

Any tips!?

Hopefully it will arrive quite early cause then when I call the nice man at Merrist Wood I might be able to go and get my two (white chicken) right away!! If not I suppose I will just have to wait till the weekend.....

I bought some layers mash as I read that it is better for chickens than pellets if they are going to be in the run for alot of the time during the day (we work f/t) as it gives them a bit more to do trying to find it all rather than eating quick easy pellets. I also bought some grit even though we do have a stoney garden just in case. Oh and red mite!

Is there anything else I need at this stage other than the above???

Can't wait!!! :D

i have a huge hard plastic box for storage...metal would be better..

I have layers pellets (think they are advisable...mine are sometimes in the run all day)

(mine had to have growers pellets due to their age first (they werent at point of lay))

you need some hay (or shredded newspaper? ) for the nest box.

I have Diamatious Earth for red mite porblems (none yet)

I have Vermex for worms.. (others recommend stronger stuff)

Also rubber gloves when washing out eglu...

I was advised to get spare plastic bars for my eglu, but mine came with plastic bars anyway..so now I have 2 sets..

I also have a tonic for their water...cant remember its name...others recommend apple cider vinegar from equestrian stores or citricidal..

I also have garlic powder and chicken spice..but to be honest they seem fine, whether given this or not..

you do need grit with Oyster shell for their eggs (helps form the shell)

dont know how much this is all necessary yet..

so basics: (in my opnion) layers pellets...water....D Earth powder (for redmite problems) straw for nest...storage for food/medcines...wellies!!!!! our garden is a mud bath..still...oh and we have bark chippings on the floor..and an extra tauplain as the rain has been so bad...

im sure others have more helpful ideas :-D

OH and I forgot to say CONGRATULATIONS !!!! its so exciting to have the chickens :-D ;-D

Brilliant  . I've still got another 10 days to wait before my (green eglu)GNRPP arrive. I'm soooooooooo !eggbrown! cited!!!!

I read somewhere on the site that Omlet contact you to arrange a delivery slot. I still haven't had any contact. Only found the delivery date out by checking my account. Think I'm just getting anxious :anxious:

Enjoy tomorrow

Well, it's true - omlet do deliver a day early!!

I got home last night at 9.30 to find 2 massive boxes on my doorstep :D I built the Eglu this morning and then telephoned Luke at Merrist wood and he said I could come this afternoon to choose my chickens!!!

They are now home and seems happy enough! It's starting to get a bit dark now and they are still outside in the run so I am wondering if I will need to get the torch out tonight..... :)

I am a proud owner of a GNR & PP - they are lovely but won't lay for another couple of weeks.

I think I am going to have loads of questions now!!

My other half is worried about eating the eggs and thinks supermarkets do something to them first. I told him it was fine and  at him but am I right?!???

They just pop them out and we eat them...right??

Stupid question me thinks

Also......do I have to vaccinate them at all?

More questions later I am sure!!!

P.S can't stop taking photo's of them!!!

so thrilled for you mojojojo, glad it came early.

Yes you just eat the eggs, don't even wash them (unless they are covered in poo). Tell your OH that many people feel a bit odd eating the first egg but then you feel odd eating anything but your own girls eggs.

Have fun chicken watching this weekend, I bet that's all you do :D

Thank you!! I knew I was right

Louise went into the eglu all by herself tonight but Thelma was a bit confused bless! I got the torch out for her and it worked straight away - good tips on this site!!

I think Louise is going to be the boss as I saw her peck Thelma a couple of times earlier

Hope they will be okay in there tonight - looking forward to letting them out again in the morning!!!
